Cheapest paint for aluminum

I got an old 14' aluminum boat from my grandpa,<br />and it doesnt even barely have any paint on it.<br />The hints of paint show a nice yellow tint.<br />I would like to paint the sides that go down about 18" or so.<br />i want just a primer grey color so can i just put on a general primer paint for aluminum.<br />Can I use the same paint for in and out of the boat.<br /><br />Please help from long time fisherman and first time boat owner.

that 'yellow' you see ,, IS the/only primer for alumium.. zinc oxide ?? or zinc somethin'.. use anythin' else as a primer.. paint will fall rite off.. <br /><br />use the 'yellow' first,,if'n it's bare,, than you can use the 'grey'..

do I have to use the expensive special boat paint, or can I use any aluminum primer and paint.

The boat will never see salt water.<br />Land locked in wyoming.<br />Does that make a difference in paint selction.

Ten,<br /><br />Any good enamel topcoat will be OK. However the primer really needs to be Zinc Chromate. <br /><br />West Marine sells it: www.westmarine.com A quart should do you just fine, it goes on thin.<br /><br />Before priming it, wash the entire boat with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. This, along with the zinc chromate, etches the aluminum for a good bond.

ten , <br /><br />years ago i repainted a 14' aluminum paint with a product called fastcat i pick up at a benjiman moore store and it held up better than the original paint . seams like it was less than $25.00 a gallon . the store said they kept it for all the aluminum hull house boats in our area . i just rubbed the hull down with easy prep you can get from homedepot and then sprayed the paint on .

RUSTOLIUM...... <br /> <br />Rustolium Metal Etching Primer........<br />Then topcoat the the Rustolium color of your choice....

I used Hammerite (now made by rustoleum, about $10 a quart) to paint the 14' john boat shown below... It produces sort of a metalic finish and it holds up well even after much saltwater use...<br />

Ten , <br /><br /> just incase you were interested , i give you the wrong name for that paint. like i said it was a few years ago. i actually came across the can when i was cleaning out my shop today and it was Rust Scat Polyurethane Enamel made by the Corondo Paint Com . great stuff and cheap

Ten<br /><br />We are not totally landlocked in Wyoming. We have some of the most beautiful lakes in the world. <br /><br />Where in WY are you? I am in Gillette.
