Since "commander" Scott seems to be the most opinionated expert taking exception to this cadet's suggestion, folks following this thread might want to read the back & fourth we've been having about the same subject at http://www.*****************/boat-fo...784#post550784

We don't need to go to another competing site to read what Scott said because he said the same here.

Bad advice is bad advice and it makes no difference where you read it.

....much cheaper one is to simply grease it up and reinstall ?upside down?; i.e., so that its fins bend in the opposite direction than they did before....

I see a tech do that, he's fired on the spot, a weeks' pay, "Collect your sh**, get out of my workshop, right now!"

This goes against the recommendation of every manufacturer, and for very good reason.

As almost all posters (I'm very happy to see) have pointed out, the blades get a set, and develop compression stresses on the inside of the blade. Flip it over and that 'inside' is then streched, and those small stresses become cracks, that rapidly become breaks.

2 words.... Just don't....

What I see is a tinkerer that has worked with what he has to make something work (at least for a little while). He is proud of what he has done and wants to share his ideas. He should not get upset when he is informed that these are not "new" ideas, just not very good ones. Would I take a piece of wire from my horn, run it from my battery lug to the coil to "limp" home, of course I would. Would I then say I have a "cheap" fix for a bad ignition switch, probably not. It's great to share ideas, just don't get upset if you find out that they are not "great" ideas. By the way, chewing gum will fix a hole in the bottom of a boat.

If you're stranded out at sea, or the middle of the lake, you jerry-rig whatever it takes to get back to the landing. But, you don't jerry-rig before going out and take the chance of being stranded....

Some people, the majority of which seem to have flocked to this post, get all tight in the pants. The first response to his thread pointed out the dangers. The rest of these posts are just to show you can take a side too. Think I'm wrong? The thread would have died 10 posts ago and everyone would have been better off for it.

Personally, I like these posts. If I'm ever on a weekend camping trip and my motor's pump goes out and the kicker won't start, I know how to limp back in without KILLING my main motor. That is btw the very thing you are all jumping on him for. Yes, he's making a questionable decision which he and everyone else has the right to do, and yes he will probably burn out his motor soon, but it benefited me so what the hay.

Also, it's been my experience that people who live like this are the reason people like me get cheap projects. To each their own.
