i am new here i have a 1969 chrysler cruise liner 3 with a 84 johnson 115 hp outboard and the vro has been disconnected by the previous owner. i was having problems with the chaging system not putting anything back into the batterys so i changed the regulator/rect but when i changed them the old one had a grey wire that the new one doesnt. the new one only had the red power wire going to the starter cyl and then the two yellows going to the wiring block with another red one. i am wanting to know what the grey wire did. i have not tryed running the engine sense i put it on last night. i am have problems finding any iformation or diagrams on the engine. any help or advice would be great thanks cody

Re: charging problems

Go to marineengine.com and pull up ignition parts for your engine;should be a wiring diagram there. Good Luck

Re: charging problems

k i will check that out and i have run the engine and i am still only getting 12.5 volts and my tach has been working even before i change the reg/rect. does the power pack have anything to do with it or would it be the stator. the motor is also not wanting to run real well at a indle it will pulse a little then die(this is mainly when it is cold once it is warm it will die whenever it feels like it but runs smooth once warm) any ideas where to start looking would be great thanks for the info

Re: charging problems

I would say you have the wrong part.

As far as your idling issues go, I would invest $30.00 into an OEM manual. You'll need to check adjustments.

I sounds to me like your carbs arnt sdjusted well enogh. I just bought a 75 hp chrysler and it was hard to start and it would idle lke **** and pop a little. I adjusted the carbs and it made all the difference in the world. It starts better than my truck now. The pulse then die thing could be fuel pump. carbs, timing. I found the best thginm in the world too. seloconline.com. Its 15.00 for a one year subscription for your motors seloc book. Thgis will be more help than you could ever ask for and its only 15.00. Its alot cheaper than throwing parts at it. And i dont think your regulator has anything to do with the tach. on mine the white wire runs directly to thr cd box. somehow the cd box tells the tach what to read. the only idea i can come up with that makes any sence to me is the regulator you got is not a high enough amp to run everything and its sacraficing the tach first. like I said I dont tihink the regulator has anything to do with it.

Re: charging problems

The motor in question is a 115 Johnson not a Chrysler !
Will may have a good point with marinengine.com seloc is no good for that motor. covers too many models.
Stickey notes at top of this forum have the wiring diagrams for that motor for free. thank tashasdaddy
