Charging problem

I'm restoring a 1985 18' stingray, 3 liter merc. This may sound elementary, the engine runs good but the battery isnt charging, brand new alternator. There are 3 lines coming from the positive post, of course one to the starter, one to the trim unit, the third is the mystery and I think my charging woes. its runs toward the bow and is cut right at the driver seat and I cant find the other end of it. The charge gauge on the dash works so it doesn't go to that, this is a real head scratcher for me. Thanks in advance.
