We are new to boats, never owned before. Looki g at a 2000 Chaparral Sunesta 210. It's been a freshwater boat, but we're looking at taking it to Baja and a few things I've read make me question whether it will be up to oceanic use and swells (whale watching, snorkeling, etc.) Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome aboard:

A 21' is gonna' get real small real quick on the ocean. In shore and in protected areas you'd probably be okay, but the minute any sort of real swells kicked up I'd be concerned about a boat that size.

24 feet is sort of the minimum for general ocean use, unless you know the waters really well and pick your days carefully. Go with a deeper V hull 22 or 24 degrees of deadrise.

Was in the Caribbean all week and was surprised I actually say a Sunesta which was about 24 or so feet and was about the smallest boat I saw. I'd want something with a steaper dead rise than a deckboat and also wouldn't buy a boat with any i/o earlier than a 2002 model year as that is when MPI came out on small block v8's and v6's which was generally the same engine used for the next decade and a half or so.
