Hello.
I have a 1964 17' Duratech built in Peekeskill,NY.
It is rated for an 80 horse engine, 1964 horses, so probably 70 of today's. Aluminum thickness heavier than most of today's boats.
In the inside in the middle of the transom there is a wooden support(16x20x1 1/4) that goes from top to bottom in order to support the engine. It is in good shape.Would a marine plywood board of 3/4" thickness on the outside of the transom of 30" width and 16" height be sufficient for 2 35 horse seahorses (1957),or do I have to make a more structural change?
Thanks for your opinions and advice.
Rolmops

I wouldn't think any reinforcement would be necessary, Rolmops.

Transom strength is needed to handle the thrust and torque, more than the weight, of the power (except for trailering, where transom savers would fit the bill).

Since you propose engine power less than the rated max I expect that you have enough already.

Good luck. :)

rolmops,

I completely agree with JB regarding the load on transom.

Your twin 35's will not even approach the horsepower design limit of the transom.
