Re: CHANGING OUT TILT/TRIM MOTOR

I have a mercury 150, I can get all the
bolts loose but can't move it enough to
clear the manual release valve on the
tilt/trim unit. Need to loosen of remove
the steering cable retaining nut and
the tilt tube nut on top of the bracket!
But can't loosen or remove? Is the
steering cable nut or the tilt tube nut
left or right hand threads??

TEX, if you can only unscrew the steering cable nut a few turns or so the threads are probably galled ,and you will need a new steering /tilt tube , and a new steering cable .

Re: CHANGING OUT TILT/TRIM MOTOR

Completely remove the steering cable from the pivot tube,as it has issues that will give you steering problems shortly anyway.

Those cable shafts get rusted-into the tube quite well. You must soak it with rust buster (WD40,Liquid wrench ect). The retainer nuts should unscrew normally, but are very fine threads. there is also a felt packing behind this retainer nut.
Once the cable end is off, remove the engine bolt to the end of the threads, but leave it on the threads. The retainer nut on the tube (engine side) needs to only be loose. Use a rubber mallet and try some persuasion ,at the same time, don't wail on it till the threads mushroom.
If this fails, you may need the heat.
