Long time reader, first time poster.

I have a new 4 stroke 140 hp Johnson and need to change the gearcase lube after the break-in period. The problem is that the boat is in the water and I don't have a trailer to haul it out. My local low-service marina where the boat is docked can't haul it out for a couple of weeks.

My question is, if I change the gearcase oil with the boat in the water and without the engine being in a vertical position, will I be able to get the full amount of lube into the gearcase?

Thanks in advance

Gary

No, it really needs to be done in the vertical position.
I don't know about filling, but it won't drain right tilted up.

No, this is my first boat. I've read the gearcase oil change instructions and even watched the video at suzukimarine.com, it seems relatively straightforward but any tips you may have feel free to pass along.

Thanks

Gary

It is relatively straitforward, and can get a little messy (for me anyway). Just remember.. fill from the bottom, use a fluid pump (available usually where fine lubricants are sold, or here on iboats), and try to use the best quality gear oil you can find. Also, if the screws are tight.. don't strip them!! Your manual likely suggests Ultra-HPF. Since this is your first service (20hr) it may be a good idea to have it serviced by your dealer, anyway. They'll make sure everything is as it should be.
