I have a 74 evinrude 25 hp, i changed the water pump. It spray out the back, but seems like it got hot while i was testing it in the tank. Is there any way it can spray out the back without going through the heads and stuff? Reason i say it got hot is because i sprinkled some water on it and it sizzled, and i could hear some ticking noises after i killed it. Any ideas? Guess it would be a good idea if i posted that i finally got it fixed, Thanks alot guys

>is there water coming out of the telltale?
>is it possible you missaligned the water tube going from lower unit to head?
>is it possible you left out the drive dog or drive key for the impellar?

Re: Changed water pump, now not sure if its working

It has water spraying out like it did before i replaced the impeller. I replaced it becasue it set up so long and i didnt want to take any chances. And the little stub that acts like a key is made into the shaft it seems. so i know it is spinning. The copper tube that goes from the top of the impeller housing seems like it lined up right. The lower unit slide together real easy. this is my first boat motor to deal with so i may just be paranoid. But it seems to me that a water cooled motor shouldn't get that hot. But i know very little about outboards. Thanks for replying btw.

If water is coming out the back, go ahead and change the head gasket. If it didn't need it before, it does now since it got that hot. (sizzling and crackling = real hot!)

Good luck!

The engine back where the exhuast and spark plugs go is definitly too hot to touch it will sizzle water. The gas is fresh mixed 50:1. It idles very smooth. And have not messed with any settings. Not sure if it has a thermostat.

Is there a way that water could still spray out the tail end. ( down where it usally shoots out) Without going through the cooling ports in the motor. Or does it have to go through the motor before it can come out at the bottom.

This happened to me last week. Try this......

I was told the water has to not only be as high as the intake, it has to be above the pump as well. I know you cant see that but imagine where it might be and over fill the tank.

I also took off my thermostat cover to assure the flow of water. May have been over kill but Im satisfied. I am very much a rookie but that worked for me. Good luck!

Re: Changed water pump, now not sure if its working

There is no way water can come out the bottom unless it passes through some of the engine passages, but the thermostat prevents water from passing through all the passages. I must be careful on this.....is the expelling water under pressure?

I believe the head cover has to come off to expose the thermostat. I would check that next, if the water was actually coming out of the telltale.

>Was there any water coming out of the tell tale?
>How much water is there in your test tank?
>Is it well above the cavitation plate(highest tip of the prop)?

As Dhadley says, damage may have been done so don't run for more than a few seconds....

tell tale? i'm new too this. If your refering to the port that sprays water, then yes it was coming out. and i have 150 gallon tank. and the water is about a inch above the intake port.

The telltale I'm refering to is a hose connected to the water passage on the side of the block. This hose allows water to escape out of the powerhead to alert the operator visually if the cooling system is defective. Not all engines have one. Where are you seeing water coming out....under the cavitation plate\(just above prop), exhaust relief under power head, or out of this hose?

Re: Changed water pump, now not sure if its working

ok it doesnt have a tell tale. its a port above the exhaust port that stays out of the water when the boat is fully in the water. It spray out of there. Its located above the exhaust about 8 inches. It seems like it should be working. Its doing everything it used to do. but i never ran it very long before, and it was at night time and never tried touching the motor. I'll just have to check the things you guys posted.

Thanks alot guys
I appreciate it.

I have a motor same year/model.

Theese have no telltales. Water will pass throug iddle exhaust ( which is what you refer to ) even if thermostat is blocked, which it seems your is. If you had it iddling smooth, maybe nothing happened to it. From my own, i know you can touch top of cylinderhead with hand, even after 1/2 hour full speed. the thermostat is a 50 degree celsius ! You have a serious problem, dont run it more that a minute from sold !!!
In fact i have one lying disassembled right now, rebuilding, if i can be of any help, please contach me.

Re: Changed water pump, now not sure if its working

If course i ment dont run it more than a minute from cold.

Be sure the water in tank covers the water pump, it is the round shape in leg, just above the cavitating plate, which is above your propeller.

The thermostat is under the little triangelshaped plate on top of the cylinderhead, just above the sparkplugs.

Removed as clanton says. Remove it and check it, by leaving in a glass of cold water. Slowly poor cooking water in and watch if it openes. Afterwards, check if thermostat was correctly installed !

When you remove the 3 screws to remove the thermostat cover, be sure you Lab dosent find them. This could lead to hours of intense searching and very bad thoughts about your dog. :D
