hi,
i am new to this forum and after going through a countless number of threads trying to find someone with a problem the same as mine, thought i would just sign up and ask, so anyway:

i have just bought a boat with a mercruiser 470 inboard, been giving it a bit of a birthday changing everything. We pulled the lower leg off the stern drive to replace the impeller, it was pulled off in forward and put back together in forward, everything lines up and there is a washer on the shift shaft, after assembled it has forward and neutral, when in reverse it just clicks, its asif its half way in, tried adjusting the shift cables aswell.

any ideas? thanks

Ayuh,... I'm guessin' the lower unit popped into neutral as you were mating the cases...
The shift shaft is now Off by 1 spline...

Ayuh,... Are ya holding Tension against the prop shaft, to Hold it in forward,..??
I use a bungee strap....

1 spline off gives ya forward, 'n neutral,... No reverse...

It really shouldn't loose adjustment by separating and reinstalling.

The long slot on the shift bracket is for reverse. The cable is pulled out to engage reverse. Do you have any adjustment left on the slot so it pulls out a little bit more on the cable?

did ya shift the lower only when it was done being worked on? this will confirm that it's shifting. look at the shift shaft coupler.

make sure it swings from facing fwd when in fwd to spun off to port when in full reverse (the pic is in neutral, half way between f and r). assuming all is well, mate the two..

if you've been adj. cables randomly. this might lead to a malfunction. the lower shift cable is pretty straight fwd. for adj. the remote cable is a more complex adjustment. for both, i think read the service manual instructions very close, sentence by sentence and doing what it says to do. random adj. likely won't lead to success imho.

so after playing around for awhile it will go into reverse but only while engine is running.. is it normal for it not to engage in reverse while engine is off?
