Hi Joshua, welcome to iboats!

The drain plug is just above the bottom fin in the lower gear housing. The fill plug is also the dipstick, smack bang centre of the upper gear housing. Change both plug seals, check the level with the dipstick NOT screwed in. The oil goes in slow and will take a bit of time to settle (air pockets). After filling, recheck the next day. You'll need about 3 quarts of 10w30 engine oil, SG or better. (AKA, VP gear oil). Get yourself a manual, it will guide you in the future.

Aldo

Tanks, I have a "Seloc Marine" online manual but I cant seem to find all the little things or detailed descriptions of certain projects.

Seloc & clymer are adequate for little jobs such as changing the outdrive oil but they are known to contain some inaccurate information. They do have reasonable exploded views though.

If you are serious about learning to do your own maintenance, get a genuine manual.

Hold on there Aldo, you don't fill a Volvo 270 drive thru the dipstick hole.
You remove the plug just to the upper right of the shift mechanism under the cover on the drive, and with a cool funnel adapter as shown below you fill with almost 3 quarts of oil. Volvo now recommends straight 30W, but any engine oil will work when it comes right down to it. Just fill the drive till the level is on the flat section of the dipstick without screwing it in. It takes a Looooooong time for the oil to get to the right level, and if you overfill. Weeeeell, welcome to the club and start draining some out. Try to keep the level in the upper 1/2" of the flat spot. That way you allow for any problems that may happen.

Doesn't the 280 have the fill plug that Don pointed out?

Re: Chang oil in volvo 270 outdrive

I always fill through the dipstick hole :) :) . however I made a killer little device that fits my qt oil bottle, its actually the little nipple from the oil filling kit from seastar. the whole key is to track how much oil ya put back in.
I dont have time to remove all the covers and fight out plugs that have not been removed in years :) .
however I reccomend those with little experience study the manual and use the factory methods of draining and refilling.

Actually, the manual shows filling through the hole I put the funnel in, but it shows filling with the drive up, and putting it down to check. Way too much up and down.

I use the same method "Basically". But the drive is down, then I can fill and check without having to raise and lower the drive a bunch of times.
This shows the drive down and the funnel I mentioned above installed.

Ya'll full of it. I fill them from the bottom with the dipstick removed and it fills as fast as I can pump it in.

It is funny that you all keep saying fill it from the top. If mine needed more then a drop of oil I fill from the bottom and pump it up. Takes seconds not days and no air pockets to worry about.

270/280 the same. There is a fill plug, and a Dipstick. I will give anyone here a $1000 if they think they can fill 2.8 quarts in under an hour through the D/S hole. Its not the size, but an air entrapment thing I imagine. The dipstick is just that, a dipstick. You CAN add through it to top off, but, by design, it is NOT meant to fill up. It takes FOREVER. Read the manual, says the same thing. Oil through the fill plug takes it as fast as you can pour it in, and when it is so easy to do it that way, why on earth would anyone bother to pump it up? Works just fine done the proper way. Jeezzz, if aint an oil question, its then how to CHANGE it... :D

Not that it matters since i dont know jack about boating but i fill mine from the bottom drain plug using an adapter, it goes pretty fast and i just wait for it to come out of the hole Don S is refering to for filling, i have done it Don S's way with out the fancy funnel, very messy.

Re: Chang oil in volvo 270 outdrive

robby
I can fill 2.8 qts of synthetic GL-5 through the dip stick in less than 10 min. works time after time everytime. I probly change 10 or so DP drives a week, more when the winterizing season hits full force, most of what I do is DP with twins and jackshafts. I learned how to do it quicker and at 30*F. takes longer to drain it than refill it then. if I make it out to seattle Ill look ya up and see if I can collect :) :) .
it bites now that they changed the cap size on the qt bottles though. makes me have to transfer the oil to a standard qt bottle so my filler fits.

I just read through this for the first time and it seems very strange that Josh has the means and skills to replace an engine, remove an upper gear unit, and has a manual;yet he can't figure out how to change the oil.No offense to you Josh it just seems odd.

Re: Chang oil in volvo 270 outdrive

I have no idea why Rodbolt, but my 280 will not take but an ounce at a time through the DS hole, then ya have to take a walk around the house, and do it again. Cold 30wt perhaps? But works fine through the fill hole. And to Vystol, if you fill from the bottom on this type of outdrive until it comes out the hole, and ya cap it off, every seal will probably be blown first time out. All legs aint the same.......

When you say that type drive Robby do you meann the volvo legs in general or just the 280? I certainly do not want to blow any seals.

Re: Chang oil in volvo 270 outdrive

I'm not sure WHAT I mean after reading through this thread again. I know that if you filled it from the bottom until it came out the fill hole, I would think that it would be overfilled, as thats the fill hole, and its above the fill level of the dipstick, right? That would be too much oil. Hey, as long as the dipstick says OK, yer OK. And Rodbolt, I have a single prop 280 calling for straight 30wt (was 40wt, but don't let Don know I said that!), so I imagine Syn would run in a lot quicker, and the straight dino a helluva lot quicker in the cooler fall, if I would bring the oil bottles in from the unheated oil shed, and in to the warm shop. But I walk into rooms now with a "wadIcomeinnerfor?" :D
