I was told by an old timey OMC mechanic that using plugs other than the recommended Champion could actually hurt the ignition, don't know how or why but the Champions have always worked so why mess with them.

I use what the manufacturer recommends.
Never tried a different make of plug in an outboard but did many years ago on a Yamaha 2 stroke motorcycle. Used what I was told was the NGK equivalent and had nothing but trouble. Being a single cylinder made it worse as well. Plug looked awful when inspected after maybe 25 miles. Put back the old L-81 Champion again and it ran like a dream again.
Coincidence.....maybe ???
Willing to risk it again......No Way.:)

as a retired small equipment and tool repair business owner
i have always found that when an NGK plug gets flooded with gas
it does not like to fire again when dried.

its very hard to kill a champion plug.

just my 2 cents :)
