if the student has a cell phone then it needs to be turned off or on silent. I texted my nephew last year and he had it on, needless to say the teacher heard it. My nephew never took it out of his pocket, a trip to the principal and a phone call to my sister later, my nephew had his phone back with a three day vacation from school. My sister was not happy with him or me. She had to take time off from work and go to the school. I am glad he did not have to stay out of the track meet that friday cause he won the discus throw and that qualified him for the regional CIF track meet. He was kinda mad at me also, so i do not text him during school hours anymore.

LOL, I love the quickness with the teacher reacted and how she immediately carried on as though nothing had happened. Unfortunately here in the states she would likely be sued for destruction of property. Even with a no cell phones policy in school that doesn't legally prohibit students from possessing phones so physically destroying them isn't going to fly no matter how annoying they may be. I'd rather be for changing existing laws in certain instances thereby allowing schools, prison, etc to jam cell phone signals, which is easily doable technologically. It's just the whole federal felony thing that's the problem currently. There's places and individuals already using small, portable consumer grade jammers that flood the different bands with garbage in a small area basically creating a denial of service attack, but using them is a technically a felony and has been since some FCC communications act enacted back in the 1970s.

Or kids could just learn to follow rules and actually respect the fact that there are 30 other humans in the room that do.

You can text a student all day long and not feel guilty, because if they follow the rules, it wont matter right?

I love teachers, and that one in particular.

Texting wasn't around when I was teaching. I simply took the cell and dropped it in the trash can, where the student could retrieve it after class. I threatened to fill the TC with water, but it turned out to be not needed. They turned the infernal things off.

I think with all of the APPs available today I would have to ban the things from the classroom completely.

Cell phones make cheating even easier than it ever was. Especially the new smart phones. There is NO reason for a student to carry one in any class room.

That kid had a lot of nerve, right in front too! I wish she would have
stomped on it.

Cell phones have made far too many people mindless zombies.

My sister confiscates cell phones from students and they lose their right to drive a car on to school property and the parent has to go to school to get the phone back, of course this is high school.

New Zealand last year.
Father and Son are partners in a Helicopter business.
Had a job on and to get to it, had to fly across a big southern lake. Father left first, son followed, but never arrived.
After many days of searching, they find the helo wreckage with body in lake.
Coroners report....son was texting a crew member on a working barge when he flew at full speed into the lake.

Middle aged woman, with ....lets say a high profile appointment, leaves an airport in her car, and drives at the legal speed thru a stop sign (T inter-section), and down a bank. Dead. Other motorist following say she never even put her foot on the brake.
Coroners report no out yet, but speculation she was texting or dialing a #.

Cheers
Phillip

One of my co-workers smashed a student's phone with a ball peen hammer last year.
The taxpayers had to buy the student a new phone.

Bottom line per our school policy: teacher can't damage students personal property.

What we can do is remove the student from the class. That is actually much more effective.
And not just for phone use - if a student is doing anything that disrupts others from learning....goodbye...see you next class

We're already out of pocket for much of my wife's teaching expenses. I'd offer the big hammer and a few bucks more for the replacement phone.

I guess the video was not a stateside school or it would already be on the news. Korea?

Sorry but that is BS I would fire the teacher and make her pay for it..

Yes the kid SHOULD NOT have answered it. and Yes he should have had it off or on silent. but hey everyone messes up and forgets.

If the phone rang during class. good form would be to quietly silence it and put it back in his pocket.. the poster that said his kid got 3 days off for a phone ringing I would have sued the school and the teacher.. (just for fun)

Think about colombine.. how would you feel if your kid was in that situation and did not have a phone available to them..

yes there is responsibility that comes with them. but guess what the whole world is wired together.. heck my Tv Wii cell phone Ipod all have internet service.. and they are not anything fancy.. that is the future of the world get used to it. and get used to people forgetting to turn them off. it's going to happen and at the worst possible moment.

again the kid should NOT have answered it. if it was some total emergency, like moms dying or something. he should have excused himself from the class. no excuse to interrupt, but even less excuse for the teachers response. I would have gone up to her purse grabbed her phone and smashed it right back at her...

I think texting is an addiction. Literally. It's like putting a drunk in a bar, when given the opportunity they will drink. Texting seems the same to me. People just can't wait to respond. It's all about instant gratification with the current generation. Libraries are replaced with googling everything. Buying an album is replaced with downloading mp3's.

Anyone here use netflix??

No problem with responsible kids having phones.

I've literally had young people bounce off me in a Wal-Mart while they were fixed to their phones while texting. My niece and nephew were here at the lake and I think the only time I saw their faces was on the boat. The rest of the time their face was buried in the phone while texting.
