Hello,

Firstly, a small apology for any possible incorrect use of terminology. I am not used to conversating about technical matters in English.

The question: I recently bought a 50 HP Johnson outboard, from the year 1991 (model number BJ50BEEIA). The CD2 unit on it seems to have been replaced by a unit of a 40HP 1987 Evinrude engine (model BE40ECUD).

Is this possible? Will it work correctly, or will performance on the water be poor?

Thanks for any advice.

Martin.

P.S. For those interested in the full story:

The previous owner told me he once bust the CD ignition unit, so he fitted it with a unit from a Evinrude 40HP with a busted power head, arguing that Johnsons en Evinrudes share the same parts, and there was no difference (in the CD ignition) between a 40 and a 50HP. I got the crashed Evinrude for free when I purchased the Johnson, for parts.

Recently, I found out the water pump in the Johnson wasn't doing it's job, so I decided to replace it. Obviously, I checked if the Evinrude had any parts in good condition I could use.

It was then that I discovered the Evinrude is from 1987, and a lot (most) of the parts on it are different from the Johnson.

Re: CD Ignition mixup?

The 40hp CD unit will have no effect on the 50hp performance.

c/6
Hooty
