Re: Catch'n any Salmon

this has been my best summer in years- got all the springs we can eat, until the winter spring's[ feeders-6 to 15 lb] come in December through March.Lots of pinks, sockeye and the odd hatchery coho[got to release the wild stock]
The best thing is the conservation measures paid off.Nobody liked them- no retention of coho, baglimits curtailed, and the commercial fishery cut way back- but the point is, it worked.
I;m not sure exactly why the salmon declined, there is always a lot of finger pointing, from commercial over fishing, sport overfishing, Native overfishing, stream habitat distruction, herring overfishing,or even it could be just a natural cycle- or a combination of all those factors.
But clearly there's no point in fishing until the last salmon's gone- the east coast cod fishery is an example of how not to do it.

Sounds like everyone is having a good ole time with their catch this year.. way to go! :)

As for me, I've had no luck in the Southern Puget Sound (Nisqually River Delta, Anderson Island and Solo Point).. I hear the fish are coming in.. but looks like their being caught before it reaches my area. Although I've seen other boats get their catch.. but not near the results that I hear from areas like Bouy 10, Wesport, Neah Bay, Seiku, etc.
I'm still hopeful though. :D

But I shouldn't complain too much.. I did however, take a fishing trip up in Ucluelet, BC Canada back in June and got my catch of Chinooks and Halibut. Not too bad.

Salmon on the Sacramento has been late and slow lately. The wife and I have been losing some at the boat and catching one here and there.

There was a low pressure system over us last Wednesday and was cloudy. I worked extra hard and got off early for the afternoon. I had the wife hitch up the boat and grab some burrittos while I drove home.

We hit the ramp as it started to rain. We had to wait awhile while all the other boats were loading up and leaving. We essentially had all the best holes on the river to ourselves.

On our first drift with roe, I was using my new Striper rod that I wanted to test out. It's a 5'6" med. Fenwick with an Okuma AV50 spinning reel using 17# test Stren.
Wham! The reel has a smooth drag and it boated a 23# Chinook in 5 minutes, with the wife at the helm.
Wham! Wife gets a 22 pounder!
Wham! Big fish! Stripping lots of line real fast!
Fifteen minutes later a 33 pound 'nook puts my new fishing setup to the test. I like it!!
Wham! Wife finishes out the day with a 18 pounder!

We limited out (2 fish each) by 4:30PM. Finnally got them all processed and into the brine by 10PM.
An exceptional day fishing. We've never limited like that before.

The smoker will be busy this weekend. :)

Fished today out of Hammond(near Astoria) fog like pea soup. Caught 2 silvers(both hens) 8 and 12 pounds and had 4 take downs. Chrome *** bright. Trolled herring(whole) with deep 6 diver. Would have been better had the fog lifted earlier, didnt lift till 11:30. Still a blast though. Last week caught a 28 pound tule, kinda dark, but the meat was still edible. She didnt wanna come in, she just parked it, had to reef on her to turn her. 20 min off anchor(a mile), what a blast.

Re: Catch'n any Salmon

Took off Thurs & Friday last week. Both weekdays were fine (nice 23 lb Thurs; 34 lb Fri), but the weekend was not. Quit early Saturday to watch football. (oh, oh...WSU & OSU lost). Sunday, we finally got some nice weather, i.e., cloudy and even a rainstorm in the afternoon. But Sunday was a fishing bust: I was doing some boat maintenance chores below deck, looked up and I was the only boat on the river. Almost spooky. Put up my canvas and got into my moorage just in time to watch a wet squall come in and have a Jamison's in hand in the comfort of the now-sheltered helm.
Sometimes it's OK just to sit back and enjoy the day!

Limited one day at Buoy 10, waiting for a good day to fish Tillamook bay in my little Smokercraft for some fall Chinook. Hard to find a day.

Re: Catch'n any Salmon

I've been up in the Sacramento delta last 3 weekends. The wife bagged a 15 pound King salmon last Saturday near west of Decker Island, trolling with a chartrues "Blue Fox" spinner. We are going back this Sunday. If you go there, call me on channel 72 and ask for Augidawg on the ship "Wet Dreams".
We will launch out of Brannon Island state park at about 7:00am.
This weekend should be really good. Not much tide happening this weekend, but it will be the peak of the salmon run.
