Cat Deterrent ???

One of my neighbors has 3 outdoor cats that are a general nuisance and I'm looking for a way to keep them away from my house and yard. The little flea bags broke the final straw as they started using my other neighbors front yard as their litter box and now I have carp piles outside my front door :mad::mad:

I dumped a bunch of cayanne pepper on the carp pile and they went to a different spot in the yard. Need something to keep those carpping machines away from my house and out of the neighbors yard.

Suggestions??? (other than a .22 or varmint trap)

The real bad part about the whole situation,,, the neighbor with cat carp piles in their yard is oblivious to it, it's like they think it's modern art or something, too lazy to clean it up. After I figure out how to keep the cats away I'll have to clean it up

That sticky pad stuff you can catch mice on will work. Put some out with a cat treat on it. Cat sticks to stick pad. Pick it up and put it on neighbors yard still stuck. Other option is to set up the sprinklers and switch them on every time the cat comes close. Should stop it after a few soakings. Blast with the power washer may help as well.

In most municipalities there is a statute that requires pet owners to control their pets at all times. Notify the local authorities of the problem. This is important because it creates a "paper trail" to minimize any future litigation. Inform the authorities as well as the pet owners that you do NOT want the cats on your property.
The burden is on them to keep the cats away.
Why not a varmint trap?
I think you should try a humane trap- they don't physically hurt the animal. After catching one, call the authorities once again, then (with the officer present) take the little bugger back to their owner still in the trap. Tell them you intend to keep catching them, but next time they'll be released somewhere in the next county.
I'm guessing that'll do the trick.
Good luck.

Try VINEGAR, put it in a spray bottle and spray it all around. CAT'S DON'T LIKE VINEGAR!

get a dog.

That works as well...Except, you gotta clean up their ****!

and give it a stuffed cat as a toy and teach it how to play tug of war

That's cute...I'm an ex MARINE with a gun. Want me to shoot your
doggie?

WOW....You might want to re-think that one. They are smarter than you!

Get a super soaker. Have some fun. Water won't hurt 'em and a few blasts should turn them away.

I used to keep one by my chair with no water in it but pumped up with air... The noise that thing made could run anything out of my yard.

Interesting that you have "carp" piles in your yard. I've never seen a cat that doesn't bury its droppings.

Spray bottles, or similar devices do work pretty well. That said, don't spray water under pressure towards their faces - you can cause physical harm to the cat's eyes.

I wouldn't do the "killer dog" routine either. If the dog does kill another animal, you could end up with more problems than you will have solved. If the same dog then attacks a child, etc., you have major problems.

If you are really all that annoyed, research the animal laws for your town and/or county. If there is a leash law or confinement law that covers cats, go to your local pound and sign up to borrow one of their humane traps. If you catch one or more of the cats, turn them in to the pound and provide the address of the owner. That person will receive a notice that the cat(s) have been turned in. In order to retrieve the cat(s), the owner will have to pay a fine.

A paintball gun works pretty well. Only problem is that after a few shots, when they stop coming around, you are tempted to put out a can of tuna as bait just to get a few more shots off.

Jay, yes they do bury it, but it's so thick with cr@p that they can't dig without uncovering old cr@p, pretty disgusting.

Thanks for the link Roscoe, got some good pointers from it. Going to mix up a batch of lemon juice/cayenne pepper/vinegar then spray it around the yard and see if the cats still come around.

I don't have to do the super-soaker thing, the cats haul *** when they see me since they have been introduced the business end of my garden hose more than once :D

Erik, by "works pretty well" do you mean that it works pretty well to keep you from noticing the cats in your yard since you'd be locked up for cruelty to animals? Sounds like a very bad idea to me... never use anything that leaves such an obvious evidence trail leading back to you.

Someone else was on the right track with how it's the neighbor's responsibility, but then totally lost me by skipping the first step of talking to the neighbor with the cats about it before going to the municipality. How about just trying to be a good neighbor... talk to the neighbor once, if that doesn't get results, THEN you can contact the municipality. What's wrong with people today that they are so anti-social that they won't even consider talking to their neighbors anymore? Ridiculous.

Out of curiousity, have you confronted your neighbor with this issue?

I think you will find that this will not include cats.

I have three cats, two of which are physically unable to climb out of my yard, and I hate to say that there is nothing I know of that will stop a cat from using your yard as a litter box, except a using pepper aroung the edges to keep them out. Unfortunately this is only a temporary measure until the rain or sprinklers wash it away.

Confronting the Neighbors will do little, as the only way they can control the cats is to keep them indoors, and usually the Owners are not willing to do this.

Good luck on the problem...

Re: Cat Deterrent ???

I just released a cat from one of my live traps this morning. Usually I would have animal control come pick them up but since it's Sunday I let him go (after my Shepherd/Lab had a "discussion" with him about property rights). I don't expect a return visit.:D

My issue is the damage that the cats were doing to my pretty Olds. :mad:Paw prints were annoying but it was the claw scratches that put me over the edge. Last year I caught so many cats that animal control practically had me on a regular pickup route. They were at my place more regularly than the mailman.

BINGO! We have a winner :D

Since I know they are not going to keep the cats inside it's a mute point to discuss the cr@p pile. From other discussions with them, keeping other neighbors happy is not on top of their priority list. 2-3 times their cats killed a pigeon and dropped it on their door step. The dead pigeon was kicked into my side yard since they were too grossed out/lazy to dispose of it. I had to pick it back up and drop it on their door step again :D

Hydro, nice looking lab, lab mix?. Reminds me of my old lab that passed last winter. When I had my dog the cats didn't dare step foot in the back yard,,, but that didn't help for the front yard...

I like your subtle hint of placing a litter box on the neighbors front door. Think I might go one further and fill a litter box up with all the cr@p I clean up and place that on the neighbor's door step.
