I would just use whichever gasket matches the flange on the pump/block better. There is oil in that area so you don’t want a leak there

I think I read previously it's a matter of fuel pressure to use the 2 gaskets, I'll be installing this weekend, anybody have a definitive answer?
thanks

Another tip: When you install the new fuel pump, check the fuel pump pushrod for wear. If you need to replace the pushrod, make sure you get the right one. They are different for the non-roller versus the roller cam. The non-roller fuel pump pushrod used on a roller cam will cause severe wear on the roller cam. The one for the roller cam has a special tip.

As far as the gaskets, see if you can find a Merc parts catalog breakdown and see what they did way back when it was new. Might show you the way.
found it:

after much fiddling around I finally got the Carter M61073 installed. Now I think the inlet and outlet ports are smaller than my line fittings, is this possible? Can someone inform me what adapters I now need if that is the case.
Small possibility that I left the adapters on the old pump and that is 150 miles away, ugh

When I installed my Carter, yes, I had to use adapters. I am not at home right now but will see if I can find the size on my laptop. I remember finding the info via google so you might try that. I think they actually show up on the Mercruiser manual parts diagram for the 5.7L.

You can find them in this parts diagram. They are used in two places on the fuel pump and one place on the fuel filter. Unfortunately, the parts list doesn't five the size on them:

thanks for all the help, I guess I didn't leave them on the original pump.
Love to have exact parts in hand as it is distant from home to boat.
thanks
