I need to replace the carrying handle on a 1975 9.9 johnson. The original handle split when I went to pick the motor up off the ground. Is there anyone that has did this before that can instruct me in this process?

Investing in a service manual would be a good idea, it's really not all that difficult, everything unbolts. Based on other motors I've worked on, my assumption is that you have to take the powerhead off and work your way down from there.

You may as well replace gaskets and seals under the motor while you have it off.

You mean the carry handle down in back of the mounting bracket, right? I don't have a good instruction to share, and would have to come up with instructions in a service manual (parts manuals might not be enough for that fix). I wouldn't think offhand the powerhead would need to be removed, but maybe some midsection disassembly. You might see if you can come up with some instructions here: http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html That handle was used on 9.9s for a number of years.

I'm not sure what you mean by the handle splitting, btw.

Yes, it is the carrying handle under the mounting bracket that I need to replace. I have already checked the Evinrude manual at Boatinfo and they do not cover the removal or assembly of said carrying handle. The handle is made out of fiberglass, I think. It split in the middle when In went to pick it up and now I have two parts dangling beneath the mounting bracket. Probably age and cold weather finally got the best of the handle.

I just found the carry handle in a parts break down and it looks like if one uses a little common sense it shouldn't be that hard to replace. Don't mean to be disrespectful.
