Carrier bearing tool alternative?

My friend has a 2000 Merc 125HP that he wants to replace the lower unit seals on. He removed the lower unit and then realized that you need a special tool that is about $100 dollars to remove the carrier bearing guide that threads into the lower unit casing. Has anyone used a more common tool or multiple tools to remove this.

Thanks,

Andrew

you can drill out (carefully) the nut (retainer) and then get it off easily, then buy another nut for the gearcasing. Cheaper than $100.

I tried drilling but it didn't work out so well for me since my lower unit had been in salt water
and was basically glued in place. After i drilled i tried tapping with a hammer and "oh well"
i guess i should have bought the tool but instead i had to buy another lower unit. Hey, it's your call!

You dont need a tool for a 125 as it has the "metric" unit and uses a bolt in carrier, remove prop, remove the metric nuts (M8), reinstall prop loosely and tap rearward to remove carrier and propshaft assy.
