Carrier bearing cracked

This weekend I was accelerating out of a cove on my local lake when my engine made a horrible noise . It sounded almost like it slipped into reverse completely ( dog clutch possibly slipped ?) once I came to a stop I could not get the engine to turn over again. Once I got it off the water I noticed the carrier bearing was cracked at the upper and lower bolt. My question is . What causes this ? And how do I fix it .

Welcome aboard.

What causes this - No oil or more water than oil in the lower unit. The bearings probably locked up.

How to fix - Replace the busted parts or the lower unit.

I’m going to be pulling it all apart today when I get off work and I will see what is going on. I’m kind of hesitant because I’ve never opened up the lower unit . Is there anything I should be majorly concerned about possibly messing up as I remove the components?

Just take it apart!----There is nothing you can do to damage anything in there.------I say that you will find a mess in there already.-----Likely time to shop for another lower unit !

Do you have any recommendations on where to order parts/ lower units ?

You might price/source a new gearcase from SEI. Their complete gearcases often sell for less than retail purchase of gear sets and bearings.

Usually from being popped in gear at high idle or panic reverse. Will need all gears and bearings. Might be cheaper to find used...
