Hello to all,

I'm pulling up all the carpet in my 96 Javelin fish and ski, and have been using " Goof Off " to remove the glue and carpet backing off all of the deck lids " metal ". Is it safe to use Goof Off where the carpet is on top of fiberglass?

Thanks in advance, Darel

Re: carpet

While I have used Goof Off to remove paint and glue in the past, I do not remember if it says anything about use on fiberglass. Does it say anything about use with fiberglass on the bottle?

Thanks, Darel

acetone, works also. carpet has no place in a boat, YACHT maybe.

Re: carpet

Hey guys... new to the forum and have been reading up on carpet. I have a 17ft Grizzly Alum. that I am extending the front and rear decks on. I have been thinking about carpeting the boat, but I have read several times that carpet has no place in the boat.

I can understand the opinion from a practicle stand point... but my issue is with the noise. Alum. boats are noise producers and aluminum decks are the worst. Easy to clean yes, but the noise is irritating.

If I don't use carpet, what suggestions can you offer for quieting the boat down. I have considered the Rhino liner or some other rubberized material, but you can't put it on thick enough to deaden the sound that is amplified in the alum. decks. The carpet will at least help that much better than a rubberized coating.

But I'm not convinced yet... so let me hear some other suggestions on how to make the boat more quiet.

Thanks!

I have a 1436 Tracker Jon and didn't want it sounding "tinny" either as I'm after big spooky fish. This is against what most would do to their boat, but here's what I did.

#1, lay rubberized roofing membrane on the deck/hull, it's a 12" wide roll of self stick asphalt based material.
#2 low decked the boat with 3/8" plywood and added foam between the decks and hull, the foam touches the hull and dampens the noise. (touches,,, is not adhered to the hull)
#3 carpeted the decks and hull sides.

The boat is one heck of a lot quieter than it used to be,,, but is kind of a PITA to keep clean. Vacuuming carpet, removing decks to clean underneath...

If you have non-removable aluminum decks above the hull, you won't be able to do what I did to quiet the boat. Or I should say,,, I wouldn't foam under the decks as it could turn into a big spounge and soak up water, a lot of extra weight. The roofing membrane wouldn't be a good idea either if it's exposed as it can leave marks, think asphalt.

You could add snap-in carpet sections though, like they have on a lot of new boats. Carpet snaps onto the deck and can be easily removed for cleaning.

I would think that gluing down the marine deck vinyl, like Nautolex or Marideck would deaden the aluminum sound. And then cleanup would be with a nozzle on a hose.

Re: carpet

I'm going to use carpet in my boat so I can sell it.... nothing helps a boat sell like a fresh carpet interior.

The one I'm keeping will have a non-skid surface, either bedliner or nonskid paint.

The goof-off is safe to use on glass, but it does leave a residue that will make it hard to glue or paint anything without further cleaning. You can use acetone to remove the goof-off residue, so it's a two step process to get it ready for more flooring materials.
