Carpet install fail

Hey guys, I've already failed miserably and wasted $250 in product that looks horrible. Putting down the carpet today and I was told to use Henry 663 outdoor glue. The glue said to use 1/16" trowel, I ended up actually going thinner with the flat side of the trowel trying to make two gallons stretch. While I was pushing in the carpet under the cap and smoothing it out, I noticed I had glue on my knee and it made two statins in the carpet, ugly yellow stains. But they were where the drivers seat goes, so not the end of the world. I ran in to change pants and continued on. But the stains kept showing up everywhere! I changed pants two more times, and was barefoot by the time I was done. I finally realized the glue was coming through the carpet!
As you can guess, I'm pretty upset and feel like taking the boat out and sinking it at this point. But I'm not sure where I went wrong? Its Shaw outdoor carpet. But it doesn't have a backing, but the carpet I pulled out didn't seem to either. I've already read about using spray adhesive and I'm convinced this probably wouldn't have happened if I did use spray adhesive?

Also, the glue said to use soapy water to clean, but so far I've only made the stains worse with that, acetone, and crud kutter carpet glue remover. Everything just spreads it around worse.

Awe man that sucks big time. Are you going to pull the carpet out before the glue sets up or leave it?

Leave it. We have already spent too much for what this boat is/is worth, but itwas coming together so well I wasn't worried about it. But now the big pay off has made all the work look horrible.

The package says use mineral spirits when dry. So maybe I'll try that.

Sounds like the wrong glue for said carpet. I did mine yesterday with the yellow paste glue and never came through anywhere. My carpet had a backing.

I guess I was surprised that this Henry glue was a bit runny. Kind like mayonnaise where I was expecting more of a peanut butter.

I just installed some inexpensive no backing indoor outdoor carpet using an indoor / outdoor carpet adhesive made by FloorCraft, purchased at a Menards hardware store. I too used a flat trowel but had no problems with it leaking through. I did get one tiny spot where the glue got on my hand and then on the carpet. Not my favorite job in the world.

Well after drying overnight I hit the spots with mineral spirits and it cleaned it up! Looks pretty good now. I'm going to stay off it today still but I'm mentally back on track at least, lol

Glad to hear you found a solution for it. Easy on the solvent and don't soak the rag with it so it doesn't seep under and dissolve the glue under the carpet.
Water under the bridge now but in the future, give it a test first before you commit to the technique for the whole project.

Yeah, in hindsight your correct that would have been the way to test it. I guess attempting that while just getting over a cold was pushing my judgement. But I always learn from mistakes, but I usually prefer it's someone else's mistake.....

No Title

I always hate uploading images to web forums, you gotta download the image, resize, and every forum uses a different method. But this was actually pretty painless..... Heres a shot of the glue, and the carpet installed. I swore I got a pic of the stains, but i cannot find it. I may have deleted it in an effort to never return to the dark days when i wished harm on my boat, ha ha

Looks good TMaxx! Sorry if I missed it, but what did you use to apply the carpet glue and how much did you need for your carpet installation? Thanks....I am in the future planning stages for my project...lol, maybe I'm dreaming a bit!

Frey, it was Henry 663. About $25/ gallon, I used two gallons. I spread it on with a 1/8" trowel. But ended spreading it even thinner with the smooth side of the trowel to make the two gallons stretch. Its a messy messy job! But not terrible now that I know mineral spirits cleans up the mess no problem
