Yamaha 2002 50HP Outboard. 10 hour service performed in June. At 100 hour service in November am told all three carbs need to be rebuilt. Boat has never sat for more than three weeks yet Yamaha (I called customer relations; girl wanted to go into fogging procedures) maintains parts look as if boat was stored for three months w/o use. That means I would have to have used it each weekend for six hours each day for other two months. Come on. What did I do wrong? Suggestions for getting Yamaha to spring for this -I honestly followed the manual to the letter. Beyond this repair bill problem, how can I prevent this in the future?

Is the repair facility the same that you bought the motor from? In the perfect world, it shouldn't make a difference, but I would think that your business would be important enough to the dealer/shop to help you with Yamaha. Especially if you are bringing the motor into shop for regular maintenance.... that is money in their pocket... if dealer will not help, call yamaha and ask for a supervisor of initial "tech" answering the phone. You will probably have to start writing a few letters as well. Documentation of all the service manual recommendations in the letter would be helpful. Good Luck

The answer is Florida Summer. It isn't what can be considered "normal" weather conditions down here. Gas has been known to go south in the tank in no time, if left-out in the Florida sun for a day or two. Heat and humidity are hard on gas and anything that contains it.
Tanks build-up condensate, and leave you with small pools of water laying at the bottom of fuel tanks. Heat refines (or degrades) fuel into real live varnish. When the wrench tells you, "your carbs were full of varnish", he isn't using a term out of definition. It is the same stuff you would coat wood with, albeit, not purpose-refined for the job.
And you wouldn't belive this, but there is an algea (SP)that actualy grows in fuel tanks.
It manifests itself as a clear,jelly-like substance.

So give the Yammababe a break on the phone,as she has probably never seen her glasses fog-up when she steps out of her air conditioned cubicle or car in northern Michigan.

Re: carburetor rebuild

let me clarify- I didn't mean to suggest blasting the initial tech on the phone.... Just if he/she cannot help after your conversation, then "politely" ask for a supervisor that may be able to help. If you do it threatening way, he/she will likely put you on hold and then "setup" supervisor to expect a bad attitude/customer. You need to try and keep an even keel.... its a lot harder to say no to a friendly/jolly/customer that just seems a little persistant. Dont cuss yammi's, tell them you like your motor...just need help.. 12' is correct (not that he needed me to tell him :D ) Good luck

Thanks for both of your replies. I'll let you know how it goes with 'supervisor.' Reasonable is the only way I know. Sometimes that alone puts me at a disadvantage. Anyway, the second part of my question: how do I avoid future annual rebuilds considering regular (but not daily) use?

Why do the carbs need rebuilt? Who told you so, and how did they come to that conclusion? Is it water or crud in the tank? If they truely need something, what is causing it? Yammyhammer carbs rarely ever need anything done to them. Most dealers dont even stock carb kits.
