Carburetor question

So I've got it stripped down, jets are 1.55mm which from what little info I could find are the appropriate jets for the carb so that's good. As far as the power valve piston... it seems fine? moves freely anyway... Are there any other ways to test that part?

If the power valve doesn't show any signs of wear at the plunger base and it's well is clear, with the spring in place it should open and return closed in hand and in place

Have you soaked/spread/cleaned the whole carb disassembled? Removed all old gasket bits and blasted with air? What about the brand new rebuild kit we heard about?

Kit is on the bench too. So far I've soaked the stripped air horn and cleaned in my ultrasonic tank... I didn't pull the plunger from the air horn as it moved nice and free and I didn't want to deal with peening the case again if not necessary. Gaskets all came off nice and clean, all mating surfaces are clean. Carb is completely stripped to all components. I have to go back in to work in 4 hours so I'm done messing with it tonight.

So, a few observations I made when looking at the stripped carburetor:
  • Float adjustment was out, not bad but not great. Also whoever adjusted it just twisted it so the dot lined up. The outside edge was correct, the inside edge sat about 1/4 inch higher... Not ideal. Also the old float seemed to have deteriorated and had something rattling in it. Replaced.
  • I cleaned and lubricated the Power valve piston, seems to be fine so I didn't replace
  • There was some gunk under the power valve jet itself but otherwise, the inside of the carb was surprisingly clean given how bad it ran. I've rebuilt much worse that ran much better...
  • Main jets are proper to the carb for the engine
  • Accelerator pump was pretty worn. Not horribly worn but enough. I also noted it was the design without the check ball and retainer under the pump
  • Idle mixture screw was pretty bent up, kit came with a new one so I replaced it as well.
Once I slapped it all back together I left the idle mixture two turns out, adjusted the choke unloader and slapped it in. Primed the fuel pump, checked for leaks and confirmed which base gasket was the one to use (2 hole in my case) popped right off and idled. Let it warm all the way up and locked it into base mode. Checked and set Idle RPMs, mixture, then confirmed timing.

Idle is still slightly rich... but with a flashlight (it's dark out) I no longer see a sheen in the water from running and my eyes no longer burn being near it despite no winds and high humidity. RPMs come up clean now, no stumble or anything and even slight changes in throttle are smooth and not jumping or pulsing up and down like they were.

Bay test tomorrow to confirm and hopefully I pick back up the 2 mph I lost between my last two rides... But I am not holding my breath on that one.

I think it is good to go gents, will report back after a bay test. I appreciate the input.

I did not bay test today. I had parade duty and the route went past the boat ramp I use. I took one look and said "hell no." I'm off Friday, we'll figure it out then.

I rebuilt my carb a few months ago, my first attempt ever. I couldn't get the dang plunger out. So I cleaned and oiled it, as best that I could, and left it in. No issues as of yet. Some before and after pics.

Your after shots are more or less what mine looked like when I opened it up. I had a little of the varnish in your bowl under the power valve jet.

Nice job.
My carb was wiped out as you can see. After the rebuild, its running really nice now. Good luck with yours, keep us posted.

I haven't seen one that bad in a long time. Glad it's running well. I'll get to testing mine on friday hopefully.

Thanks the carb was really gunked up and rusted, the boat was sitting in a driveway for 12 years unused. It's running amazing since the carb rebuild a few months ago as it was resurrected from its grave. It idles nice. I'm stoked, and all for an $11 kit and some good DIY YouTube videos to guide me. I got the boat for free, and it costed me about $1200 to get it where I want it.

So I took the cover off this morning to get ready and like half of my vinyl in the boat turned pink.... Happened in 3 days. How, I don't know. Boat was dry, cover doesn't leak and it hasn't rained. Cover doesn't rest on upholstery either. A little disgusted and if this is the foreshadowing to how the rest of the day is going to go, maybe I shouldn't go out. Still going to try though...

pinking is common on vinyl when its at the end of its life. it is being attacked by mildew from the foam side.

while you can bleach it, the pinking will come back

I get that. It is 20 years old. But still, disappointing it more or less went from looking perfect to that overnight. I already called my buddy and he said drop it off and it'll all get replaced.

It's likely from bacterial growth. You can always give bleach a shot but if that doesn't work there is a product made specifically for bacterial pinking. It's called, wait for it, Pink Away.

So carb works mint.

And as far as the pink... 2 hours in the sun and it's completely gone. I didn't touch a thing. I've seen that pink away... we deal with those bacterial growths at work... that stuff ain't cheap when you have to do the whole boat.

So all was good until near the end of my 2 hour run. Started backfiring/popping through the carb. I don't suspect the carb at the moment but I'm going to start digging into it....

Hi Everyone - I have some info that I hope will be of help to anyone else experiencing a gas smell from the engine and exhaust area.

The fix for my situation was replacing the thermostat.

When accelerating I heard a pop (not a backfire) and experienced a loss of power. Headed straight for the dock and pulled the boat from the water. Didn't see any evidence of a gas leak - spent days looking for one. Cleaned the carb and did a driveway\hose test - all seemed ok. Put the boat back in the water and went for a test drive. Heard the popping sound, experienced the loss of power and could smell gas. I tried adjusting the carb but could not eliminate the smell.

Turns out the engine was not reaching full operating temperature and that prevented the choke from operating normally.

I hope this is of help to someone.

My fix was 3 flat roller cam lobes and a couple cylinder bores and valves that looked like the surface of the moon. :(

I sorry you went throught that.

Mix fix was easy, discovering the cause of the problem was torture.

Im hoping my fix will help someone else not go through what I did.
