carburetor adjustment on 1977 johnson 55 hp

need advice please went to the lake today and had trouble getting it to idle but once I got it in gear it ran well just kinda boggs down about half throttle then when you get past that it run good full throttle for a short period then it starts bogging down again if you back off a little if runs fine again. let my 10 yr old drive and he didnt back off and it fould the top plug. any advice would be great.
have a owners manuel on cd it doesnt tell me anything

there are no adjustment on those carbs, they are fixed jets.
start at the beginning, check spark and compression. my vote for the problem, is dirty, contaminated carbs. good reading here. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680
