Carburator setting

I own a 2008 2 cycle 50HP Electric start Yahama. The problem I have is that when I go to start the engine for the first time, I have to remove the cover and manually reach in behind the carburator cover and close the choke in order to get the engine started. After the first inital starting, it starts fine. For some reason Yahama has elected not to put any type of external choke on the on the engine cover. How can I adjust the carburator so that I don't have to fight the cover removal problem. If you don't choke it you will just about run down the battery before it starts. Can someone please help me out? I've taken it to the dealer and $116.00 later it's still doing the same thing. He did replace the spark plugs for the $116.00. Thanks, Cajun MIke

Re: Carburator setting

Unfortunately mine does not have a key type choke either. I have a tiller handle on it but even with that I've checked to see if there was any type of solenoild on the choke and there is none. This is a very poor design and will think twice about another Yahama.

Re: Carburator setting

Does your owners manual talk about the Prime Start enrichment system?
If it is a prime Start motor instead of a choke one do a forum search on Prime Start and read up on it .

Here is a thread I started that has some info, but there are lots of others

Make sure to read the last 5 or so posts in it.

yes, the red lever is what I am referring too as the choke. What is it, and is this how in set the quick start feature with?

Re: Carburator setting

It is the Prime Start System if you are referring to the red lever. read up on it like I said in the other post. Sound like you are having a carb/ prime start passage plugging problem

Re: Carburator setting "Rodbolt"

Cajun Mike again. My Yahama is a model 50TLR HP Ser# LAZ62807J101. The red lever behind the silencer cover on the front of the carburators is what the manual refers to as an "emergency starter valve". It says when the engine is cold and it want start pull the lever down to the OPEN position until the engine starts the push it to the CLOSED position once the engine is started. I noticed on my engine there are three positions this lever can be set on. Looking at the engine from the front my lever was set from the factory, all the way to the left meaning 12:00 o-clock position, to go to the open position you have to turn the lever 90 degrees clockwise or to the 3:00 o-clock position and then to the 6:00 o-clock position to close it. Under normal operating conditions should this lever be in the open, closed or neutral position meaning back all the way counter clockwise to the 12:00 o-clock position?
