If I spray carb cleaner in the carbs when the engine is running to try to flush anything out could I do harm? The motor runs fine till it hits about 5000 rpms then falls flat on its face? 140 Johnson 2 stroke motor.

Probably not going to help.
You need to figure out what is causing the issue.
Lack of fuel, lack of spark. Maybe its the plugs, wires or something like that.
Possible that something is in a carb jet, or the fuel pump is not keeping up.
Just spraying cleaner in the carb will just lean out the mix and cause some damage to the engine.
Sounds to me like your motor is running great, but the fuel delivery system just can't keep up with the required flow at 5000RPM's, maybe a bad or weak fuel pump, a restriction somewhere in the fuel system, maybe a partially plugged filter screen, etc. Start at the tank pick-up, fittings, primer bulb, fuel filter, fuel pump, etc., just work your way up to the carbs. Good Luck!
