Carbon in my 225 optimax

I have a 99 optimax 225. One of the air Temp sensor wires was cut by the motor cover. This caused the motor to run rich for quite some time. My mechanic thinks this is the cause of low compression on the 5 & 6 cylinders. The motor has only 46 hrs use and the pressure is 10 lbs low on these cylinders. Does anyone know of a good way to clean out the carbon without doing a rebuild. Also does anyone know of someone else having the same problem. Mechanic says it is a Mecury wiring location issue that he has seen before.
Thanks

Howdy arbee and welcome to iboats!

I am not familiar with your wiring problem, but here's a link to the decarb process from the FAQ section right here on the iboats forum.

web page

Didn't your mechanic recommend a decarb process?

You can was a can of TUNER spray and bottle of fuel tuner treatment. You will run your motor up to temp. an then idle at about 1000 to 2000 RPMs
and spray equal amounts in to each carb. intake
then let stall . once it has sat for at least 1 hour (best over night) then run the motor at full speed for at least 20 min. this will help .
If you you have alot of carbon biuldup you may have to do this more than once or twice. I know it will help clean up you carbon problem . I've done this alot.
good luck
jcv821

Spray lots of Seafoam into the cylinders and let it sit overnight, and mix one can seafoam to one gallon of gas and use that as your fuel to decarb the motor... Run the engine for a while at idle and spray seafoam into the carbs (if you have them) until it stalls... Spray more seafoam in the cylinders and repeat the process until you see improvement. It's gonna smoke like hell, but that normal...

hello
DO NOT spray any liquids in the air box.
there is a tech bulliten on the proper mix ratio for the decarb solution on the opti-pops. but no fogging oils or decarbs should be sprayed in the airbox of the opti-max engines.

INFO FOR OPTIMAX OWNERS,
MERCURY QUICKLEEN IN FUEL TANK,
USE OPTIMAX OIL ONLY.
FOULED OUT PLUGS POSSIBLE (NEED NEW ONE'S).
BAD DIRECT INJECTORS (CARBON DESPOSIT'S).
TAKE LEAK DOWN TEST NOT COMPRESSION.

Re: Carbon in my 225 optimax

Never EVER spray anything into either the airbox or the cylinders of an Optimax. Those direct injectors are $ 287.60 ( EACH )

You can run tuner (seafoam) through the fuel mixture.

However, the preferred method is to use "QUICKCLEAN" in the fuel, along with Mercury "OPTIMAX" oil.

There never was a routing problem for wiring on the Optimax, the routing problem was fuel/cooling. My guess is the problem lies with a lazy technician, not installing the cover properly.

There is alot of bad information out there about the DFI engines, no matter who made them. Disreguard most of it in favor of someone that actually knows what they're doing.

and mix one can seafoam to one gallon of gas and use that as your fuel to decarb the motor.
DO NOT DO THIS...IT WILL EAT FUEL LINE, GASKET MATERIAL AND SEALER AROUND THE INJECTORS!!!!
Helping out is one thing..ruining someones engine is another...Buy a factory OEM manual and follow directions.

Eat fuel line and gaskets?

I understand this is not a carbed motor but are the injectors that fragile?

I guess I should stick to what I know...
Sorry...

Re: Carbon in my 225 optimax

No KC, you make good points, and ask good questions! The Opti's are just a little different animal. The injectors are no more fragile than any other injector, but you have to remember where they are... mounted in the combustion chamber not in the intake manifold.

At no time is an EFI injector subjected to compression, whereas, a DFI is...

If even the slightest amount of oil causes the least amount of "hydrolock" then the injector pin is likely to break. That pin is nowhere near the mass of a connecting rod. (physics again, fluid will not compress)Parts built as strong as a diesel will fail under the same cirumstances.

As for adding "seafoam" to the fuel, I really dont think it will harm it, but i wouldn't add more than a can for 30 gallons. It will help keep the fuel system clean, (no doubt about it) but "quickclean" is a Mercury product, tested to be compatible.

This is the time and place to have these discussions, in an open forum... Better than after any damage is done. It's my priveledge to try to help people who want to do things right. I sometimes get frustrated so I am now apologizing to anyone I may have made uncomfortable...
