My boat stated but would die as I went "full throttle". Actually before I got to "full". I could pump the throttle back and forth really quickly and sort of prime the engine until the throttle was open, although top speed was never achieved and I had to do it every time from idle. I figured carb problems.
I wanted to simply order a new one but this is a 1989 4cyl with the carb base of 3.25 x 2 rather than the ever-so-popular 3.75 x 2. My replacement is a bit pricey (unless someone on here knows where I might find one).
So I went the route of rebuilding it. Now it won't start unless the throttle is open a bit, dies immediately back in neutral (won't idle) and then I noticed white smoke (just a little) coming out of the top of the carb. I immediately shut it off and let the water continue to run. No fire, thank God.
Also, when I was testing all of this it sounded like the carb was gurgling like fuel kept being pushed into it even though everything was off. I even disconnected the fuel line and it kept doing it for about 20 seconds.
