Carb spitting fuel

The motor is a 1975 Evinrude 40 hp. It has always started and run like a top. Last time out on the lake the motor would start but flood out almost immediately. If I disconnect the fuel line it would start again and would run fine until I connected the fuel line and would then again snuff itself out with gas. The motor would shake as it began to stall and gas would spit out the carb.<br /><br />All replies are much appreciated...thanks.

Inspect for sticking float valves in carb bowls.If good you may have reed problems.Does the fuel primer bulb get firm after pumping several times?

Can you be more specific...I don't really understand carbs, what exactly am I looking for? And yes the primer ball gets firm. Is this something that can happen suddenly. The boat was running fine earlier this spring.

Your carburetors have float vavles that determine the amount of fuel that is allowed to enter and maintains a specific level.If the internal linkage that actuates these floats or the needle valves which the floats actuate are sticking it will cause the carburetors to flood out.Generally when float valves are sticking causing a flooding problem the primer bulb never gets completely firm when pumping.<br /><br />On the other hand if the carb floats check out to be fine then you may have a problem with a broken or chipped intake reed valve.<br /><br />If you plan on undertaking the troubleshooting and repair of your engine I highly recommend a service manual.

Now that I think about it...I'm not sure the primer ball was getting firm. It sure didn't need any more fuel so I can't recall ever pumping it. I'll check it out. I actually have a service manual so I can probably figure it out from there. Do you have a link or something that might further explain what the reeds are and their function. Thanks much.

tou could have a hole in the fuelpump diafram.if there is preasure on the tank it will flud into the crankcase

If the float valve is stuck open you should see gas flowing out into the carb throat when you pump the fuel bulb.

Thanks for all of the input. I actually just sold the boat and it is the new owner who is having these problems and I am trying to help him work through them. I know I gave him the manual when I sold it to him so I will have to go over and look through it with him. I hope its something not to complicated to fix since it is his new toy now and I want to see him be able to enjoy it the way I always did.<br /><br />Any other things I should look for?
