carb settings

Hey folks... is 1 1/2 turns from fully closed the correct setting for the carb on my 86 35hp merc outboard? Ran it last nite with the wrap around side cover and front cover off and it ran fine...idled down and was putting the side wrap on it and it dies or wants to. its like it starves it for air and kills the motor. took the wrap off and it ran fine. If I adjust the air more on the carb it doesnt want to idle at all. am I missing something here?? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Sounds like you are getting exhaust up in the cowling area. Need to check out further.

Thanks for the reply! Could this be a result from droping the lower unit when I replaced the waterpump a few weeks back? Like maybe I didnt get the rubber boot on right at the split for the exhaust??<br />Thanks
