I have a 1972 Merc 500, 50 HP 2 stroke that I'm trying to remove the carburetors on. I'm sure there is a trick to getting the right side nuts off without removing the distributor but it isn't obvious to me. I've owned this boat for years and it only recently started giving me symptoms of a fuel problem when starting. The engine would stall when you first put it in gear and give it throttle. Other than that, the full range of available throttle is smooth. Occasionally, when motoring in a "no wake" zone the engine will die and be difficult to restart. If any of this sounds familiar please feel free to weigh in. Also, it probably time for points, how big a job is that?

Thanks in advance.

You will need to remove the starter and distributer from the engine.

Thank you for the info. The Distributor looks like a nightmare to remove and retime, any tricks I should know about first that will make the job easier???

Thanks for your help.

Do not turn the stop screws for timing and etc. just remove the 2 bolts that hold the plate they are mounted on from the front and take the plate off the engine that way you will not change the timing or pickup. There are 4, 1/4" bolts that hold the dist to the dist tower remove them and the dist will drop down on some engines the wire will not let the dist swing out of the way and the wire holders need to be removed. The dist shaft has a blind spline so it has to go back together in the right position. Piece of cake

Thanks for the advice.... worked great. I took apart the distributor and it appears the cap and rotor could stand to be replaced, are there alternatives to the $300 rotor prices I've seen? Where is the most reasonably priced place to get parts for this outboard?

Thanks,

In most cases hot water and dish soap with a small stiff brush will cleans them up. The center carbon can be bought separately if it needs to be replaced.
