I am looking to buy a 14 foot aluminum boat w/ a 25hp tiller pull start. The boat will start, run for a second, then die.

Spark is good and strong on both coils.

Fuel issues. Motor runs when mised fuel/oil is sprayed directly into the carb. However, the carb won't work as it is intended and deliver fuel to the motor.

A mechanic "rebuilt" the carb in attempt to correct, only to later say that the jet is too messed up to rebuild and that it needs a replacement carb which is aprox 300.00.

Question
1. Is this carb jet servicable like on a car carb?
2. are these carbs disposable or known to be receptive to being serviced.

Suggestions?

thanks all!

Carb shows at being half that price at shop2.evinrude.com and I do believe if you replace it with an OMC kit you should be good to go. As far as the "jet" being messed up is he referring to the needle and seat? If so it comes in the kit and is simple to replace. As far as something else being messed up no clue and yes carbs are receptive to rebuilds.

25 R 77 S 1977 25 hp Johnson. the high speed jet, is readily available, the low speed is available in limited quanities. what it sounds like is the guy did not use the proper tool to remove the high speed jet, it is now stuck in there. will require and ez out to remove the jet.

low speed needle Part Number: 0387701

high speed jet Part Number: 0320921

read carb cleaning and rebuilding, carb adjustments, ethanol.

Do you know if the mechanic actually cleaned the carb, or just looked at it and said he couldn't. I have a 74 25hp, on my carb I didn't have the tool to get the high speed jet out (the bottom one) and stripped it a little bit so I just left it alone. I first tried cleaning it with the spray kind. It helped some but it start giving me troubles soon aftward. Then I soaked it in the can stuff and it made a huge difference. You should definitely be able to get it going with out replacing the whole carb. Try soaking it, replacing any old or worn fuel lines, replace the float, gaskets, and needles with new ones from a kit and see what happens then. The kit is about $25 and the fuel lines would be maybe $10 if that.

You say it runs then dies. Does it die when it's idling or when you try to go to high rpms?

If the mechanic wrecked the high speed jet and seat beyond repair somehow, call tim's outboard and get a used carb bowl. Cheap and quick! 218-682-2331
