Carb problem....I think.

I have a 1990 Evinrude 48 SPL and I just rebuilt the carbs and the fuel pump. To give a little back ground, the boat sat for about 5 years. I did those two things right from the get go. When I start it up it fires right up and runs for about 8-10 seconds and dies. Sometimes I can keep it running longer by pressing the key choke in when it starts to die. I did find the primer choke thingy and the red lever was facing about the 3 o'clock position at its detent. I moved it to the 11-12 o'clock position and it will idle on its own and sounds ok. Obviously Its probably not where it is suppose to be and Im guessing Im not getting enough fuel. Where should I start? Thanks in advance for any help.

The red lever should be at the 6:00 o clock position for automatic operation when you push the key switch in.

A good way to check the proper operation of the solenoid is to crank the engine and while running push the key in. If it is operating properly, it should make it run rich and drop the rpm around 1000 rpm.

Well, I have been reading about that red lever and the way that my solenoid is mounted there is no way it will point to the 6 o'clock position. The travel is from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock going clockwise. At 3 o'clock I can feel a detent but at 9 o'clock it pretty much just stops on whatever is behind it.

My Mercury 40 was doing the same thing only it would run a little longer. It would jump up to 30 mph and then quickly die down to around 20 mph. I cleaned out the fuel tank once and the carberators twice. Finally found trash on top of one of the needles and seats. My thinking is the motor will run off of what is in the carberator but will not allow it to fill back up. Since finding and removing the trash it runs like a top. I have found that adding Stabil will help remove the tarnish from places that you can't see or get to. But keep a clean fuel filter. Hope this helps.

Well I Cleaned the carbs out again and now it will idle. It does bog down when I try to give it throttle, but I think I am going to do that Sync procedure. Ill keep you up to date.

So I took it down and put it in the water. I couldn't even get it to idle on its own. I could start it and keep it running by giving it a little throttle but it still wont idle. I haven't found the link an sync thing yet. Hoping thats the issue.

If you have been testing on a muff and then put it in the water, the difference in back pressure on the exhaust system could be why it would stumble along out of the water, but fail to idle in the water.

Wahoo!!! Well. I soaked the carbs in that B-12 Chem tool stuff. Quite a bit cheaper than Seafoam. I was amazed of how much stuff came out of them just from soaking them. I used like 3 cans of carb cleaner the other day and it did nothing compared to this. Put it all back together. Got it to idle on muffs in the yard. Took it down to the creek and had to turn them out about a half a turn or so to idle in the water and off I went. She ran great. Thanks for the advice.
