Carb leaking gas from top two holes 1989 85hp

Brass floats are known to leak.-----Give them a good shake and make sure there is no fuel in the float.

If the needle's fuel valve it's a fixed non removable one take advantage while servicing the carb to micropolish with toohpaste the internal valve's seat with a cottoned sushi wooden stick previously dampened in water, repeat the procedure rolling a new cotton onto the stick till comes out white clean.



This cleaning procedure along a new needle install and a correct float height match will stop any carb's fuel spills fully guaranteed...

Good deal thanks for advice. The float doesn't have any gas in it I soaked it in a cup of gas to be sure.

Put in a pre carb filter; catches all kinds of crap creepin around

I have put a clear filter in place now after I cleaned the carbs. Now I just have to stop this thing from leaking gas and it should be good to go I hope so anyways until the next problem. I got a good deal on this moter so it's worth putting the time and a few$$$ into.

Ok my kit come in today. I was putting back together and noticed that on the new needle it is the same size and has the rubber tip but it doesn't have the little clip attached to it that connects it to the float. I'm not sure if it will work or not any suggestions. I installed it and when the float comes up and pushes needle and then drops back down the needle stays up. With a little shake it will fall but don't want to finish until I know a little more

Is it possible to remove the old clip with precaution and install it on the new needle ? If not, will need to order one, if without one carb won't work well...

So the rear body has a different shape, connector whatever compared to the old needle, check if can order a new clip for that precise needle type. The new needle could be same diam and lenght but the rear end says it all....

Yeah it's different. Same size though. I'm gonna give it a try. Sorry I posted another thread on this and some say there's don't even have a clip and work fine. They say the replacement is heavier so it does not need the clip.

If the float's have a cut in which to hook/seat the needle's neck on it doesn't need a clip. Inspect the needle's seat with a flashlight, if gunked, dirty micropolish it in circular motion as in post 23 till shinny for the heavier needle to work flawlessly with the float...

I got it all back together. Carbs on. Fires right up no leaks. Choke is working all seems fine. Hopefully the water test goes well. Thanks for all the advice guys

Found the elephant: last year one of my customers asks me to get a 97 120 started after it fell off the pontoon.
He neglected to tell me if fell off in salt water and set for over a year and nobody did anything to protect it
The carbs, were in really bbaddd shape, right into the dumpster, thank God for Ebay!!
