Re: Carb Cleaning Question

Update. After troubleshooting electrical with my newly received OMC manual, I moved on fuel. After removing the air silencer and carbs, I found that the fuel line going to the bottom carb had quite a large hairline split. I reassembled with the split facing out and pumped the bulb. Wouldn't you know, when the pressure started building, out spurted a substantial amount of fuel. I proceeded to replace all fuel lines on the motor and I am looking forward to getting it on the river once the flooding subsides. Do you think that this fuel leak could be the root of my inability to accelerate over 2,000 rpm?

Sure could- Any fuel/air leak can cause havoc--

Thanks boss. All that being said, I'm glad I didn't notice it first off. Otherwise I wouldn't have spent the dough for a legitimate omc service manual. Will keep you posted regarding my next test run... Thanks again!

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

A point on his problem....if you do not get a firm primer bulb when pumping it up, you got a problem somewhere in the fuel system. Most likely a leak under the cowl, or a bad primer bulb. The firm primer bulb (prior to start) is a key factor in proper fuel system operation.

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

Thanks dasel, I replaced all gas lines and thought I was doing good. I pumped the primer bulb and it got firm, but I could still squeeze it. How firm should it be? I had the air silencer off and could hear fuel movement and continued to squeeze. I could not identify any leaks after hose replacement. Fired up the motor and it was spitting unburnt fuel mix from the exhaust. Identified that cylinder 2 & 4 were not heating up. I swapped power packs and the problem moved from side to side with the movement of the power pack. I have a new one being delivered tomorrow and ill retest. But after running on only two firing cylinders, I have what seems to be a black mixture of fuel/oil/carbon leaking down the mid section of the outside of the exhaust housing. Would this be because I potentially flooded the engine by over pumping the primer bulb? The burning question now is "what's leaking from my Johnson" :D
