Carb Cleaning Question

Hi All!

Quick question. I am thinking on of my high speed orifices may be clogged on my '82 Johnson 140. Even if it's not, the carbs haven't been cleaned in many, many years. If I disassemble the carb and give her a good cleaning, will there be any kind of synchronization required after I put it back on? Thanks in advance!

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

you will need to tune the jet by adjusting the needle, but no synchronization of ignition will be required.

Thanks Scurvy! I am mechanically inclined, just not familiar with the mechanics of boats. Any advice on tuning the jet?

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

There are no adjustable jets on a 1982 140. They are fixed. Make sure they are all clean.

Thanks Boobie! Your reputation precedes you. I got ahold of a copy of a legitimate service manual and it said the same thing. I went ahead and ohmed out my coils and port side read about the same 250 +/- ohms. Starboard both read zero. Am I off base to think my power pack it the issue and this has nothing to do with fuel?

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

you didn't state a problem yet, i'd get the carb kits so that you'll have all the parts at your finger tips.

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

Pn, I have them on hand and ready to go. Problem was that I couldn't get the boat to plane or go over 2000 rpm. Compression tested fine, thought it might be high speed orifice, got my hands on a proper service manual and started troubleshooting. I got to the coils and had nothing on one side. Do you think I am headed in the right direction? I appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks again pn!

I think I should add that she fires up great and I have no idle problems or slow running problems. Only when I put the hammer down. Here's my original post:

1982 Johnson 140 Won't go over 2,000 RPM At WOT
Hi All,

New to the forum and new to boat ownership (but not boating). Here's the story. I purchased my Dad's old Champion from him and he always kept it in great shape. It has a 1982 Johnson 140 on it and i had no problems last year, ran like a bat out of hell. Dewinterized it and took it to the river to race my Dad in his new boat and do a little fishing. I put her in the water and she fired right up. No idle problems or sputtering, all seemed well. Putted out of the no wake zone and got ready to throw down the hammer. Accelerated to full throttle, but she wouldn't plane or go over 2,000 RPM. Needless to say, I lost the first race of the season to the old man, and had a perplexing problem in front of me. I would greatly appreciate the help of any seadog or river rat willing to help. Thank you in advance!

Had the same problem on my 110--After explaining my problem ( not hitting on one cyl, good spark, plug & compression) Boobie suggested i remove & clean my carbs---PROBLEM SOLVED :joyous:

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

Thanks boss! I had the suspicion that could be the cause. Did you ever ohm out your coils and or anything else? I have the carb rebuild kits, I'm just trying to figure out why I get no ohms on starboard coils. Any ideas?

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

If you are doing the test correctly on the coils they are open and are junk. Replace them. I have never known two coils to go bad with an open condition though. Recheck your testing of the coils to be sure.

As to the carbs. Make sure of the jet sizes when you pull them. They will have a number which can be checked in the manual. Yes, do a synch and link. Check for the plates all being closed when at dead idle (the roller off the cam at dead idle) Check your idle timing and high speed timing. When that is done. With the engine not running, push the throttle forward to wide open and ensure the throttle plates are horizontal.

No sir- just swaped coils to see if the one was bad---
Did not use carb kits either- things are so simple & gaskets, floats were fine so just used carb cleaner & air compresser -

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

Multimech, I will verify my tests and go through electrical troubleshooting top to bottom. I know these carbs haven't been opened up in ten years. So I plan on going ahead and cleaning them up regardless.

Boss, I will give the swapping coils thing a try and see if that works out for me.

Thanks again for all you help guys!

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

When running, do a cyl drop test on it to see if all the cyls are working which i doubt. You'll be able to pin point the bad cyls.

Thanks Boobie, I looked really quickly on the forum and couldn't find the procedure. Would you be so kind as to enlighten me on the process? Again, I greatly appreciate the help!!

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

When it's running in the problem area, get an insulated pliers and pull one spark plug lead at a time. If you notice a drop in rpm, that's a good cyl. No drop, that's a bad one. Either spark, compression or fuel.

Re: Carb Cleaning Question

Update. After troubleshooting electrical with my newly received OMC manual, I moved on fuel. After removing the air silencer and carbs, I found that the fuel line going to the bottom carb had quite a large hairline split. I reassembled with the split facing out and pumped the bulb. Wouldn't you know, when the pressure started building, out spurted a substantial amount of fuel. I proceeded to replace all fuel lines on the motor and I am looking forward to getting it on the river once the flooding subsides. Do you think that this fuel leak could be the root of my inability to accelerate over 2,000 rpm?
