I have a 90 sundancer with the 7.4 & what is everyone’s thought for a cfm carb choice? It’s pretty much just the stock 330 hp in her with the good ole quadrajunk on it.I’d like to replace the divorced choke on it with an electric choke. Anyone with any ideas? I did remove the divorced choke off of the intake & made up a block off plate…can I just put an electric choke on this carb?

Get the kit and install the electric choke. As far as the "quadrajunk" you actually have the correct carb for your motor. I can't tell you how many people want better performance, so they slab a bigger carb on there. Then they complain that they can't get it to idle right or other issues. I rebuilt the Quadra jets, stick them back on and tune. No problems.

But as far as that spot on the intake I’m good with just slapping my block off plate on it?

Likely a 750 cfm. They only made two sizes 750 and 850 cfm, i dint think if any of the larger ones made it to marine applications.

bottom line any qjet properly rebuilt and set up is as good a carb as anything you may put on there. Question is do you have a rebuildable core?

There is numbers on your carb, that should lead you to the correct cfm. And kit also.
Also, be sure to replace the float, it usually doesn't come with the carb kit. If it's the brass float they are usually good. The plastic ones can cause issues.

Edelbrock all the way with electric choke. Just be sure to buy marine and not automotive carb.

Ditto this.

One of the problems with the quadrajet... is that it's no longer made or available as a new carb. Very little (if any) aftermarket support.
The Edelbrock/Weber is still available brand new out of the box and every tuning kit/part is still readily available to order.
I just picked up a used 1409 from Ebay last week for $130. I ordered a rebuild kit for $55 and accel pump for $13.
Because it's going on my 4.3 V6, I needed a V6 tuning kit. (another $35).
The spreadbore to square flange adapter was another $15, plus $6 for a stud kit.
So for a little over $250, I have a perfectly "good as new" Edelbrock 1409 that is perfectly calibrated to my application.
The Quadrajet I pulled off will just get tossed under the workbench where it belongs.

Seems like I recall Qjets sometimes had issues with the bowls draining, the fix was to epoxy the plugs in the bottom so they dont drain. I dont know if that was a issue with your particular carb model.....? And this was a automotive issue, I dont know if it applies to marine applications.

Yep, all qjets had the issue.
They also had crappy floats that got heavy after soaking up fuel.
The Edelbrock has dual brass floats right out of the box.

actually if you know where to look there is a ton of aftermarket support for the Quadrajet.

www.quadrajetparts.com

keep in mind for the youngsters here who weren't born yet that just about every GM car that had a V8, from 1966 to 1986 came with a Quadrajet, except for a few high performance Chevrolets that came with Holleys. That means every classic GM muscle car came with Quadrajets. So there is a huge aftermarket supporting these, you can get just about any part you need if you have a good core.

I have never had the well plug issue nor a leaky float on mine. These happened on early automotive units but are not at all common on the Marine units.
