carb adjustment question

Hey Guys,

My carb on my 77 Johnson 35hp was leaking fuel pretty badly. I adjusted the float drop so that only dropped about 1/2". Before, the drop was much lower. Took it out to the lake and the leaking stopped until the end of the day, when it leaked again.

It seems like I still haven't got the drop set shallow enough yet if it still leaked a bit. My question is, if I set the float drop too shallow, will I starve the engine and cause it to run too lean or overheat?

Thanks-Jeff.

Re: carb adjustment question

Float should be set even to the carb if flipped upside down, leaking would suggest something else is up, maybe needle and seat, bad float.

Re: carb adjustment question

yes, any kind of restriction can cause your eng to run lean, and overheating is your least concern........ a couple of melted pistons is more likely to happen.

your float drop has nothing to do with it leaking........ the drop is what lets fuel in.

you want to set the "rise" stop...... thats what shuts off the fuel flow inot the carb.

you can get carb rebuild and adjustments here http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31

if its leaking i would say you float is mis-adjusted or you have trash in the carb

Thanks. Damaging the engine is not part of my intended maintenance schedule. -Jeff.

Re: carb adjustment question

to adjust the float rise, should I bend the float down? Would that make it shut off the fuel flow before it filled the bowl? Any precautions on doing this? Thanks-Jeff.
