I own a '89 2300 Renken seamaster, with a OMC one sea drive outboard 235 hp. After the Huricane last week I went to start the boat and it started fine, but will not shut off once running. I have replaced the iginition switch, and that did not change anything. I have traced all the wires but nothing seem abnormal. All the wires go into an "electonics box" on the motor, and the wires I can test all turn on and off like normal. It seems as though there is something I am missing somthing stupid. Please help I don't know what to do.

Thanks
Tom

Re: Can't turn off my motor

I just had the same thing happen yesterday, and posted about it earler. In my case, I have an Evenrude 15HP. I'm pretty sure my case was caused by the connection to the stop switch, which I was testing just before it happened to me. There was a 2 wire connector coming out of the electronics box, that went to the stop switch. If there is a poor connection there, the motor won't stop. I tightened up the connection, which I think goes directly to the ignition switch, and now it stops again. The stop circuit is grounded when the switch is off, and open when the switch is on.
Be careful, I just found out that there is high voltage on that connection. I think it was something like 360 volts or something when I was checking it today.

Tom....find the black w/yellow stripe wire(s)...can't remember if your power pack has two or one....coming from the power pack into the amphenol connector. Pull the connector apart. Take the side of the connector that's going to the engine harness and find the pins or sockets with the B/Y wire. With the key off, measure from the pin to ground. You should see the meter peg or show a very high resistance. Turn the key on (might want to disconnect the battery) and measure again. The meter should not move. If the meter does not move on the first test, the B/Y wire going to the igntion switch is open.

Another thing to try.....with the motor running and the key off, move the wire harness around where it goes into the engine. This is the most likey place to have a broken wire. If the engine dies when moving the harness around, the BW wire is broken right here.
