Cant get to the carb! I want to rebuild it.

I have a 1969 mercury 500, serial #2629264. I have discovered that it is a dual carb buried under the rest of the components for the engine. I have removed the starter the bracket that is at the front of the engine and moved the components attached to the bracket to the side. I have only the fuel line and the distributor to remove from the front of the Power Head. My question is do I have to remove the distributor to get to the carb? I do have a manual but it does not go into detail as how to do this. I dont want to remove the distributor because I dont want to mess with the timing.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

those motors are known for that.unfortunatly it is nessary to remove distributor(just put a mark on cap and distributor to allighn them later) to gain access to carbs.take pics if nessessary.u will need to twist it and pull it down and to the side.i know this might b flustrating but it works after u got hold of this.just did mine carb cleaning and outcome was good.if u want to replace just needle and seat there is no need to take off whole carb

If you just want to set/replace the float etc. just take the fuel feed and tops off
here's the manual settings
also check for this type of carb filter it might be plugged.

Thanks for the advice!!! I actually got the carb off but I only removed the part of the distributor that the cap is attached to. Your pic and instructions of the float settings are a bit different but look easier. I will give them a try for the right side up setting.
