Hello,

I am very close to pulling the trigger on buying a '95 chris craft concept 19' with the 5.8L/Cobra. This will be my first I/O, I have had an outboard for years. There are a few items that needs addressing asap.

1.) Power steering leak at the rack (so the guy says)
2.) He cant fit more tha 20 dollars in gas in it. Says it will spill out when he tries to put more in there... Very strange that it runs...

3.) No power to the dash or lights.

Is 4K too much for this boat? Also does anyone have any insight on those repairs?

Thanks a bunch guys!

1. The fueling problem may be caused by a plugged up vent line (the one that exits the hull).
2. Power steering leak.... Easy fix.... Racks available on fleabay
3. Dash lights. Again an easy fix. Blown fuse, burnt out bulbs, maybe a bad wire (light power feed or ground).

4K may be on high end with problems. I'll bet that in September he'll take 2K. A little work may save you a ton of bux.

2k???!! I haven't seen a mid 90's boat selling less than 5k here in N.Y. I just sold my 88 16' conquest outboard for 2100....

Tell him he has a boat with an obsolete motor. On top of that its a Ford engine. Good luck finding parts for that sucker. I bought an OMC powered boat because I got it for a song. Offer 2K and when he balks go find something similar with Merc or VP power.

Re: cant get gas in the tank.....

The gas tank may have a bad pickup, possibly broken off just below the top. Runs out of gas (when actually 3/4 full) and will only take $20 to "top it off".

I'm guessing that the dash, like most small boats, is fed by one positive wire from the battery and then daisy chained from gauge to gauge. If everything is out, then it is probably the one positive lead rather than the multiple negative wires.

Not sure where you are, but in south Florida $4k gets you a nice 18' outboard powered boat from the mid to late 90's with fewer problems.

When you say it may have a bd pickup, I'm not understanding where that is...
i would assume that it pulls fuel from the bottom of the tank.. Am I not correct in thinking this?

Also, Are OMC Ford parts really that hard to come by? I figured it was a pretty popular setup...

Re: cant get gas in the tank.....

The pickup is a tube that extends down into the bottom of the gas tank and is basically the suction line for fuel. It usually threads into the top of the tank. If it is cracked, has a hole, or broken part of the way down then the engine will stall when it starts sucking air. Add $20 in gas and the level goes up over the break and the engine runs.

You can offer what ever you feel comfortable with. If the seller isn't satisfied w/ the offer, let him refuse or let the negotiations begin. The buyer has the upper hand here. Bought my '92 25 1/2 foot, in gorgeous condition, w/ trailer, in FL last year for under 9.5K. Locally in NY area, everyone selling a similar boat, in much lesser condition, want's lots more. Deals are there for anyone that wants to search them out, and oh yeah, go with cash in hand, which is a game changer in the buyer's favor. Minor problems can be a huge savings for anyone who wants to make it seem like a "deal breaker" for the sale, play hard ball and willing to do a little work.

I know that when I sell something, I usually ask more than I am willing to take for the sale to happen. Let the buyer chew me down a bit (usually what I planned to take to make the deal). Buyer is happy he got a "better deal" and I'm happy I got what I origionally wanted.
