Can't find serial number of my outboard.

I have 1988 Mercury 100 hp 2+2 outboard. Where should the serial number be? I did a search on this topic, but the picture I found was for a much newer engine. My engine does not have such a plaq in the position indicated.

should be on the transom mount under the front part of the engine on the steering tube.

Just a quick hint. Mercury often installed a welch plug with the s/n imprinted in it.
