Hi I am a little new to boating and I have taken my prop off my boat to find the size and pitch for a replacement and have had no luck...people keep telling me it should be stamped on it...have had no luck finding numbers other than D961 and there is a little 5 and a little 84...maybe Im not looking in the right place (highly possible) but I cant just drive downtown to a boat store and ask or get it measured...i live in a little town and the nearest boat store is probably like 120 miles away...so if someone could help me out here i would appreciate it...And would having a prop that is damaged a little bit keep me from planing up?

Give us the details on your boat and motor also wot rpm and speed.
A slightly damaged prop isn't likely to not plane. Did you look under the prop nut for some numbers?

Remove the prop from the motor. Make sure you remove the thrust washers from both ends of the prop hub. They often stick to the hub because of the grease. Many people post that they cant find the numbers because they don't realize they are looking at the thrust washer or spacer that is stuck to the hub. The number is usually stamped into the prop hub underneath the thrust washer that you have now removed.

Ok planing for a boat means leveling out, right? If so it doesnt do that...the rear end stays down...the boat is a '74 glastron starflite trihull open bow with a volvo-penta AQ 130C with the 270 outdrive...now i dont know what the wot range is supposed to be but when i took it out i couldnt get it above 2800 rpms the speed not sure yet since i dont have a gps device...im trying to figure out how to post pics of the prop but cant at this time...when i removed the prop i had a washer in front to lock the prop cone on and a spacer washer on the rear that i also removed

rpm range is 5,000 to 5,500 130 hp.what size/type boat?
You may have to have a prop shop measure the prop for you.
Assuming a typical 18 ft boat it should plane easily and run about 40 mph.
Is the bottom clean and smooth?
Start with the simple stuff.Be sure the throttle opens all the way.
Be sure it is running on all cylinders.
Be sure the timing is right and advances as it should.Do a compression check.

Re: Cant find pitch and size numbers for my prop

i had the same problem ...you'll never guess what it was. well it was the push rod under the valve cover. it sounds like it's running fine starts up and everything. but when i took the valve cover off one of the push rod was bent and fell off of the lifter. it was an easy fix but what i figure was there was too much play in the lifter and the push rod went to the side just enought for the lifter to bend it and it fell off. pretty easy to fix . and now from 3000 rpms it went to 5500 rpms no problem. as far as your prop standard on them is a 15x15 or a 15x17 right hand or what they call standard rotation with 17 spleen short hub hope this helps
