Dropped my old LG phone and broke it badly. Ok, go to the carriers store and try to replace it. ARGGGG......

It looks like no one builds a plain cell phone anymore. They all have useless bells and whistles I'll never use are over complicated and suck up battery power. No I don't want text. Sorry I already have a camera. No, I have no need to access the internet. No need of a calculator or any of the other "tools". I don't care if it has multi-ring tones. No it doesn't need a memory card to play music. On and on and on...

I JUST WANT TO MAKE AND RECIEVE PHONE CALLS!!!

I used to feel the same way. Until I got a smartphone for Father's Day. GPS and navigation, it's literally a life-changer.

Easy to find a plain jane phone. Go to eBay or any reseller of "older" (they still work as long as GSM or CDMA) phones.
No reason to pay the carrier and get locked in to a contract, unless you are looking for a fancier phone with a higher subsidy.
You can also pick up a "Trac phone" (http://www.tracfone.com/) for cheap almost anywhere. They do carry some very basic models. tracphone is found almost anywhere (Fred Meyer, Walmart, Meyers, etc).

Many manufacturers have tried "ruggedized" phones with simple features but the American consumer (as a whole) is not looking for that. Smartphones a la the iPhone is "da thing" today...

just stay away from any phone that work on AMPS or TDMA. Those network/technologies are no longer used today around here (alphabet soup yes, but been in the industry for over 20 years, you can "injured"...).

LOL. Just get a flip phone. Don't worry about the added features and relax. Or go on craigslist and get someones old phone. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would give you there phone for next to nothing (old outdated flip phone that is).

I must agree that while I am a smart phone guy, for the pure function of making and recieving calls you cant beat an old clam shell (flip phone).

I found tracfone to be the easiest and cheapest way to go. You can get their Motorola 376g Razor for about $20. It comes with double minutes for life. My phone service cost me around $100 per year. I don't gab and chew the fat on mine so 800 minutes/year for 100 bucks fits my style.

Bubba, check and see if revol is in your area. We got the daughter one that can take pics and video but she can not send or receive them, nor can she get on the internet either. They still have the "basic" phones. For hers we pay 30 a month for unlimited text and talk and for a kid you can't beat that. She has had good luck in our area as for service as well.

Smart phones rule!

I needed old tractor spark plugs and stores like Autozone, don't really have old/odd parts listings. I was at the parts counter, using my phone's Internet to find the proper cross-reference, for one of their spark plug part numbers. Shouldn't have to be this way, but it is. Got the right plug I needed.

I don't know how I ever survived , before my iphone came along.

I just went onto Verizon to see what was available for a new user. 23 Basic phones which were not smart phones with half of them free or less than $30.

Not sure what the problem is.

I think he wants the same technology as his old phone, that is why I suggested he look at tracfone because their phones are several years behind....he may even find the same model as his broken phone. No service contract, monthly bills and local taxes plus they have "plain Jane" phones. Dollar general has an Lg420 for only $15.

At least 9 of them are flip phones with some of them free.

Bubba, you might want to take a closer look. I see 2 flip phones that won't break the bank on the Northwest MO cellular web site. The other option is Craigslist. Some of the phones offered are new. You just need to make sure they're set up for your carrier. Since you're looking at a local Craigslist listing, you should find that to be the case.

Why not be bold, brave, and uninhibited and try something daring - like getting a phone with texting capability? You don't need to use it all the time but once you start, you'll see it really can be a timesaver and offer peace of mind.

Bubba, are you SUURE you aren't a distant cousin of my father's? He is 60yrs old and we used to be on this nice little sprint family plan until he refused to conform to the smartphone revolution.

He now has some cheap POS pay as you go phone that is non-smart phone and he is SOOO happy with the money he's no longer giving to BIG cellular Co. The problem is, my entire family can no longer get in touch with this guy...yeah his phone bill is cheap because every minute he talks costs him so he never answers.

I would rather have that very quick instant connection to my father that we used to have rather than dealing with this BS cell phone he bought himself.

This particular issue was a surprisingly big deal within my family. You only get so long on this planet, at least be accessible to your kids before your times up!

These smart phones really are life changing. I work for an online marketing firm and ALL the data is suggesting a very quick (within 18mos) transition to smart phones by a VAST majority of the worlds population. I'm not saying, but I'm just sayin!

Give your dad a break......when you get older you have earned the right to a simpler life,if HE so chooses. I am an old man too that has had a very technical career but that is behind me now . I just want things plain and simple and the leisure time to enjoy the simple things in life that I missed out on. I hate cell phones when I'm fishing or driving, I spent most of my life without them and life seemed better in those days.
