Hi
I have been working on this rather new (2000), low hour engine for a long time, and can not figure out what's wrong. (I am not very experienced with outboards!)
The engine was last run with starter fluid .. for a good few seconds, and then more .. and then it would not run anymore. Now, I am trying to figure out why.
The compression is still good - at around 110 ave each cylinder. (they vary by 8% or so). The carb (one carb only) .. well I fully suspected that, so I cleaned it very thoroughly (twice) and then rebuilt it (that little pump thing had tiny holes in the rubber membrane).
Spark and timing are excellent.
Yes, the gas is OLD .. but after reading about that on many sites, I grabbed some, added the right amount of oil for my chainsaw and proceeded to easily cut up a large tree!!
Now I realize that I am not getting fuel to the upper cyl (1 of 2). When I put my thumb over cyl 2 - it sprays fuel at me in a cloud, but this is not the case for one. Also, plug 2 gets wet .. but not one.
When I try to start it, it eventually backfires out the exhaust (I have the lower unit off). That is the only pop I ever get.
I looked at my reeds and thought they were all opening ..
- could the starter fluid have damaged the reeds or their seal?
- could something else be stopping fuel from getting to cyl 1 ?
HELP !! .. all comments very appreciated:
