Cannot get into neutral

Hey all, I have a 94 johnson 30 hp two cylinder long shaft tiller. Had it out last night and motored to my fishing spot. When I went to leave, I could not get it to shift to neutral and therefore could not pull the hand starter at all. The shifter arm was very hard to move and would shoot right past neutral from forward or reverse. I opened the motor case and could still not get the cam actuator(which is new and had been working fine) into the right position for neutral- it would just jump forward or back too far. What gives?

they only thing i can think of is the shift linkage came loose.

Thanks...are you saying the linkage in the lower unit could have come loose/off? Is that something I can investigate or is repair shop time?

the linkage under the carb. i would drop lower unit and investigate. whether you are confident, or you have a shop do it.
