Re: Can you outguess my mechanic

sschefer, the reason I recommended going through the carbs is the OP mentioned several obvious problems, including reused gaskets and parts not removed and checked/cleaned.

I'm not guessing. That would need to be done no matter what the actual fault was, except low compression. It might solve the problem. If not, then we step back to square zero and cover it all.

Kirmy, the best thing you can do is get the genuine service manual and go at it. These things really aren't very complicated, especially compared to modern automotives.

John I am gratefull for all the help, and here is where im at now. Took the carbs off one at the time cleaned them good with chem tool and blew them out needles and seats were good , floats were plastic and good . took the fuel pump apart and it looked good , the screen had some trash, carbs got new gaskets. Put it on the muffs and ran it sounded great I beleave it sounded better than it ever has , but I wont know untill I can put it in the water again and thats 60 miles away. So maybe later this week

Could this be my problem, only one vent jet in top and bottom carbs middle one has both, that would explain why it idles good and runs wide open good but floods in mid range, according to manuel those being open with no jet would make it run really rich in mid range

A lot of us pull the vent jets out and on some motors merc leaves them out from the factory. The idle jets are the important ones. The vent jets are for mid range fuel economy.

Re: Can you outguess my mechanic

Well seeing we are ALL guessing and the machanic is guessing. I Guess spending hundereds of dollars on a so called MACANIC was the right thing to do? If you guys spent more time adding info rather than trying to critsize on something you cannot even pinpoint yourself then maybe he would have done like I said and fixed it himself, but seeing everyone wants to proclaim themselves right and I don,t see it, then whatever. All your doing is confusing a simple issue of a fuel issue with a bunch of babaling garble. The forum is for suggested information on probable causes of problems that may or may not help the poster. If you have information to add or other information you feel the poster needs then post it. It is up to the poster to take what he needs and leave the rest. Not up to recipricated posters to critsize. This is not conducive to this forum. With that said Have a great day

Brilliant if you can figure out whats being said.

Re: Can you outguess my mechanic

I agree with John. If the gaskets were re-used that could be a major source of your problem. I think we all pretty much agree it sounds like a fuel issue. I guess my question would be why did you have the carbs re-built and what was it doing before they were worked on?

Whats really amazing is how you can say crap about me when I was the first poster quote(rebuild the carb yourself and fuel pump if that hasn,t been done yet) and you add you intelectual BS and say it,s something different. Thats what amazes me. PS J I don,t do drugs but you need a life

whats worse is I have people private message me because they cannot understand your mitigating babling Pscho garble. I,ve seen better than you and worse than you well you asked for it and now i hope you get it.(Probably NOT!) Anyway I have more hands on experience than you have had dates in you entire 90 years of existance. I, may not be married to an encyclopidia, but I know how to talk to people with dignity and in a way many repect and understand. Unlike you and your self rightuos made throne as well as your non human compasion. It makes no mind to me but when you have nothing better to do than insult, put down, and critisize then you show the real you. Must be lonely at the top> people want something that leads them in the right direction and most of the time i,m on track. I,ve found you out to be wrong many times but like the machine you are you keep moving on I stay and keep helping those I assist I give my right arm and my right leg and steer them in a direction of real hope and real help and mostly none of that is you.

Did you get the epoxie'd jet carrier out?
3 thoughts on the topic:
1. One lean cylinder will cost you a piston or worse.
2. I'd bet the epoxy was to cover a split gasket washer.
3. LocTite makes a thread repair epoxy system that works well in these situations. Even if it's stripped out, you can probably fix it.

hope it helps

No offense taken. FYI - John's been around wrenching on that motor of his for a long time. He's always willing to help and most of the time he's dead on the money. He also openly admits when he's wrong and does what's necessary to correct it. That's a quality rarely seen anywhere.

There's an old saying that I try to live by. It goes something like this: "If you disrespect your fellow man because you think you're smarter, you better think twice" That simply means that everyone has something to bring to the table and the more you listen the more you learn.

Re: Can you outguess my mechanic

The second part was well said now if J could just comprehend what it says I guess all will be OK. I, not trying to gain any glory for being right(Which I was) But this has been going on for some time in other posts as well not just here. When I say rebuild a carb that means totally rebuild the carb or carbs. This includes anything that comes in a full caburetor kit. This includes all gaskets which apperantly was the problem. Any one saying the rebuilt the carb water pump or any other componant of an auto, motorcycle, outboard, lawn mower etc is a LIAR if they did not include all parts related to the rebuild and reattachment of the componant. They did what they consider to be a rebuild but, it was a repair that like in this case was a costly mistake. Not a rebuild.

Re: Can you outguess my mechanic

sigh...

Maxz, I'll jump on yer butt whenever you say something stupid, like adjust an idle valve that doesn't exist.

How often that happens is entirely up to you.:D
