sschefer, the reason I recommended going through the carbs is the OP mentioned several obvious problems, including reused gaskets and parts not removed and checked/cleaned.
I'm not guessing. That would need to be done no matter what the actual fault was, except low compression. It might solve the problem. If not, then we step back to square zero and cover it all.
Kirmy, the best thing you can do is get the genuine service manual and go at it. These things really aren't very complicated, especially compared to modern automotives.
