Re: Can you clean it??

A brand new one on IBoats is $27 bucks + S&H. Is it really worth the effort trying to resurrect the piece. I did precisely the same thing when I was replacing my seats. Seats were rotten, the aluminum peds and sliders were looking sad. Ordered new seats and while waiting for them, cleaned up peds and sliders. New seats arrived and they old sliders were too big to fit!! Priced around and get best deal from Walmart online (they sell a big chunk of marine stuff). The old sliders are either sitting arund the garage or I slung them. Can't quite remember. Sometimes you just gotta bite the $ bullet and be damned.

It's a point to consider but why put another $60 plus into the rebuild when I can clean and paint for a lot less. I realize that $60 is not a lot of money but isn't part of this process "do it yourself?"

Not sure about the $60. Maybe more like $40 for 1 piece + S&H. If you are happy to spend time doing all that work on that item, then go for it. I do that a lot on my vehicles and the boat, but I know when my time is time wasted and it's better to just replace. Once my father in law once, whilst me and the wife were on vacation, stripped down and repaired a sometimes it worked hand held gas lighter for our gas fire. He was proud of his repair. We paid $1.00 for it from the dollar store. Would I have spent time fixing a $1.00 item? Hell no. But he's a retired Ship's Chief Engineer, so likes tinkering and keeping busy. He's also a cheapskate. Time is something we tend to undervalue.

Yepper...$29.84 times 2 which is $60 plus S&H.

I do agree there is a tipping point where it just makes sense to go buy the part and this is probably one of them considering all the elbow grease I have to put into. Still, it's good to discuss these topics for those that come afterward and want to do the same.
