Hi. Like so many a newbie. So can you help diagnose my engine woes?

A newly serviced, impeller changed, 1989 merc 4.3 V6 alpha 1 sterndrive. Took for 1st time over here in the English channel. Initially ok.

After opening up significant overheat (no alarm) off the dial : 240deg F. Significant reduction in power. Much steam and heat from engine. Eventually worked out a water hose at the bottom of engine not attached (blown off). Reattached.

Engine started up again ok after cooling but thereafter engine temp climbed after some mins of 2000rpm. towed in by lifeboat!!

What a start!

Any ideas on whats happened? Have I cooked the head? T' sat probs? No water in oil at mo.

Thanks-Mark

Make sure you have water coming from the drive, disconnect the supply hose at the thermostat housing and start the engine on a flusher.
